CONTENT OF THE LESSON

INTRODUCTION

Have you ever seen a woven mat or basket? These items are made by crossing strips of materials over and under one another in a regular pattern. The same method can be used with paper strips to create colourful mats and beautiful designs.

In this lesson, pupils will learn the meaning of weaving, the types of weaving, the materials used for paper weaving, and how to weave a simple mat using paper strips.

LESSON 1 – MEANING OF WEAVING

Weaving is the process of crossing two sets of materials, such as paper strips, threads, reeds, or fibres, over and under one another to produce an object like a mat, basket, cloth, or decoration.

MEANING OF PAPER WEAVING

Paper weaving is the art of using coloured paper strips to create patterns by weaving one strip over and under another.

TYPES OF WEAVING

1. Paper Weaving – Using paper strips to make mats, bookmarks, and decorations.

2. Cloth Weaving – Using threads or yarn to make fabrics.

3. Basket Weaving – Using cane, raffia, or palm leaves to make baskets.

4. Mat Weaving – Using reeds, grasses, or palm fronds to make mats.

LESSON 2 – STEPS IN WEAVING A MAT WITH PAPER STRIPS

1. Fold a sheet of coloured paper into two.

2. Draw straight lines on the folded paper.

3. Cut along the lines, leaving the edges uncut.

4. Cut another coloured paper into long strips.

5. Weave each strip over and under the cut sections.

6. Continue until the mat is completed.

7. Apply glue to secure the strips if necessary.
