ENTRY BEHAVIOUR

Pupils have previously learned about loyalty, national service, and the importance of being responsible to the family, school, community, and nation.

This lesson builds on that knowledge by helping pupils understand how good leaders guide people, make decisions, and help groups achieve common goals.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

INTRODUCTION

A group of people needs someone to guide and help them work towards a common goal. Such a person is called a leader. Leaders can be found in the family, school, community, and nation.

For example, parents guide their children at home, teachers guide pupils in school, and community leaders guide people in the community. A good leader should be honest, fair, responsible, caring, and trustworthy.

In this lesson, pupils will learn about the meaning of leadership, who a leader is, and the different types of leadership.

LESSON 1 – MEANING OF LEADERSHIP

Leadership means guiding, directing, and helping a group of people to achieve a common goal.

Good leadership helps people to work together peacefully and achieve their goals.

FOR EXAMPLES

  • A pupil who guides classmates to complete a group task shows leadership.
  • A class prefect who helps maintain order in the classroom is a leader.
  • A parent who guides and cares for the family provides leadership.
  • A community leader who helps people solve problems peacefully demonstrates good leadership.

WHO IS A LEADER?

A leader is a person who guides, directs, and influences others to achieve a common goal.

A leader may be found at home, in school, in the community, or in the country.

EXAMPLES OF LEADERS

Parents are leaders in the family.

1. Class prefects are leaders in the classroom.

2. Teachers provide leadership in the school.

3. Community leaders guide people in the community.

4. The President and other government officials provide leadership at the national level.

A good leader should be:

1. Honest – Tells the truth.

2. Responsible – Performs duties properly.

3. Fair – Treats people equally.

4. Hardworking – Works seriously to achieve goals.

5. Caring – Shows concern for others.

6. Respectful – Respects other people.

7. Patient – Listens and remains calm.

8. Trustworthy – Can be depended upon.

9. Brave – Makes good decisions even when they are difficult.

10. Helpful – Supports people who need help.

LESSON 3 – TYPES OF LEADERSHIP

1. Democratic Leadership

A democratic leader allows members of the group to participate in making decisions.

Example: A class prefect asks classmates for their ideas before making a class decision.

2. Autocratic Leadership

An autocratic leader makes decisions mainly by themselves and expects others to follow the decisions.

Example: A leader who makes all decisions without asking members of the group for their opinions.

3. Laissez-faire Leadership

A laissez-faire leader gives members freedom to make decisions and perform their duties with little interference.

Example: A teacher allows a group of pupils to organise an activity with little supervision.
