CONTENT OF THE LESSON

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION

Technology is the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes of human life.

Technology includes all electrical and mechanical devices.

Computer, television, radio, scissor, comb, etc are good examples the products of technology.

Products of technology are made with types of materials such as wooden, iron or plastic materials.

MEANING OF MATERIALS

Materials are resources used in making products of technology.

TYPES OF MATERIALS

There are 3 types of materials used in technology,

1. Wood materials

2. Metal materials

3. Plastic materials

1. WOODEN MATERIALS

Wooden materials are the products of technology made from the wood.

Examples of wooden materials are as follows:

  • bows and arrows
  • shelter
  • canoes
  • furniture
  • doors and windows
  • pallets
  • bridges
  • electric poles, etc.

ASSIGNMENT

Find out 5 products made from the following:

1. wooden materials

2. metal products

3. plastic materials

LESSON 2 – METAL AND WOODEN MATERIALS

2. METAL MATERIALS

Examples of metal materials are as follows:

  • bolts and nuts
  • chairs and tables
  • tools
  • cylinder
  • pipes
  • roofing sheets
  • pots
  • spoons
  • containers, etc.

3. PLASTIC MATERIALS

Examples of plastic materials are as follows:

  • rulers
  • toothbrushes
  • electronics
  • shirt and blouses buttons
  • plastic pipes, etc.

LESSON 3 – USES MATERIALS USED IN TECHNOLOGY

The uses of materials used in technology are as follows:

1. They are used for building houses, schools, hospitals, etc.

2. They are used for making toys.

3. They are used for making machines such as generators, car, etc.

4. They are used decoration.

5. They are used for design.

6. They are used for lifting heavy objects.

7. They are used for making cutleries – plates, spoons, knives, etc.

8. They are used for making tools such as screwdrivers, hammer, etc.

9. They are used for making security tools.

10. They are used for protection.

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Teacher organizes pupils in groups or pairs depending on the size of the class.

3. Teacher displays sample or chart showing the products of technology made from the following materials – wooden, plastic and metal.

4. Teacher ask pupils to identify the products and materials each of the product is made from.

Pupil’s Activities – Identify the materials each of the product is made up.

5. Teacher listen to the pupils and uses their responses to introduce the lesson.

Pupil’s Activities – Pay attention to the lesson introduction to understand the concept of the lesson.

6. Teacher leads a discussion on the meaning and types of materials used in technology.

Pupil’s Activities – State and explains the meaning of each type of material used in technology.

7. Teacher displays chart showing different collections of technology products.

8. Teacher asks pupils in groups or pair to examine the list of products of technology to state the uses of wooden, metal and plastic materials in technology.

9. Teacher leads a discussion on the uses of materials used in technology with appropriate examples.

Pupil’s Activities – Use the chart to state the uses of materials used different products of technology.

10. Teacher summarizes the lesson on the board with appropriate lesson evaluation.

Pupils Activities – Participate actively in the summary of the lesson by responding correctly to the lesson evaluation and write as instructed.

CONCLUSION

To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
