PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, most of the pupils should have attained the following objectives –

1. explain the meaning of nation.

2. recognize Nigeria as a nation.

3. identify Nigeria and other nations on the map of the world.

identify and explain the characteristics of a nation.

 

 

ENTRY BEHAVIOURS

The pupils can identify Nigerian National Identity such flag, anthem, pledge, currency, etc.

 

 

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of Maps, Pictures,  Video clips, Charts, Class textbooks and  Newspaper/magazines.

 

 

METHOD OF TEACHING

Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION

There are 7 geographical regions are commonly regarded as continents.

List of continents are,

1. Asia

2. Africa

3. North America

4. South America

5. Antarctica

6. Europe, and

7. Australia.

Each of the continent is made of nations.

There are 195 countries in the world today.

193 countries that are member states of the United Nations and 2 countries that are non-member.

MEANING OF A NATION

A nation is a body of people sharing a spirit of unity and want to live together under the government.

A nation is a large population that shares the same culture, tradition, language, history, etc.

For example, Nigeria is a Nation.

Nigeria is a nation in Africa.

LESSON 2 – NIGERIA AS A NATION

Nigeria is a federal republic comprising 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, where the capital, Abuja, is located.

The largest city in Nigeria is Lagos, one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world and the second largest in Africa.

Nigeria has more than 250 ethnic groups speaking 500 distinct languages, all identifying with a wide variety of cultures.

There are 3 major and largest ethnic groups in Nigeria.

The major ethnic groups are the Hausa in the north, Yoruba in the west, and Igbo in the east.

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson and,

2. Displays map of Nigeria.

3. Lets pupils examine and identify the map of Nigeria.

Pupil’s Activities – Recognize map of Nigeria.

4. Asks pupils in group or pair to use map of Nigeria to locate Nigeria on the map of Africa. Likewise, lets them use map of Africa to locate Africa on the map of the world.

Pupil’s Activities – Identify Nigeria on Africa map and Africa on world map.

5. Uses the maps of Nigeria, Africa and world map to introduce the lesson.

Pupil’s Activities – Pay attention to the lesson introduction.

6. Leads a discussion on the meaning of a nation with examples.

Pupil’s Activities – Understand and explain the meaning of a nation.

7. Displays chart showing world map and list of nations.

8. Helps pupils to locate other nations and continents on world map.

Pupil’s Activities – Locate other nation and their continents on world map.

9. Summarizes the lesson on the board.

Pupil’s Activities – Participate actively in the summary and write as instructed.

 

 

CONCLUSION

  • To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson – reasons we need to build our nation.
