PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, most of the the pupils should have attained the following objectives –

1. identify the traditional wears of different tribes in Nigeria i.e. Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo, etc.

2. outline some of the traditional wears and their importance to different cultures. e.g. babariga, buba and iro, sokoto, yar-shar and hula”.

The pupils can define traditional dresses.

 

 

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of chart showing different traditional dresses of Nigerian tribes and cultures.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON  

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION 

Nigeria is made up of 371 ethnic groups, the majority of which are the Yoruba, Hausa and the Igbo. These ethnic groups are made of multiple tribes enumerating up to 371.

 

TRIBES AND TRADITIONAL DRESSES 

A tribe is a social group of people who shares the same language, customs, and beliefs. For example, the Yorubas, the Igbos and the Hausas.

Traditional dresses are dresses wore by people of the same culture and tribe. That’s, they are dresses represent the culture or identity of a specific people or ethnic group.

 

 

EXAMPLES OF TRADITIONAL DRESSES IN NIGERIA 

Yoruba Traditional Fabrics and Dresses 

  • Fabrics – Aso Oke and Adire Fabrics
  • Men dresses – Agbada, Buba and Sokoto with matching cap
  • Women dresses – Buba and Iro with matching gele

 

Igbo Traditional Fabrics and Dresses 

  • Fabrics – Akwete and Isi Agu Fabrics
  • Men dresses – Shirt and Wrapper with matching cap
  • Women dresses – Short wrappers with plenty of beads of different types and styles.

 

Hausa Traditional Fabrics and Dresses 

  • Fabrics – Bura and Saki Fabrics
  • Men dresses – Sleeveless with pair of three-quarter shorts
  • Women dresses – Sleeveless half-top worn over a wrapper

 

 

LESSON 2 – IMPORTANCE OF TRADITIONAL DRESSES

The importance of traditional dresses are as follows:

1. It promotes our cultural heritages.

2. It promotes peace and unity among the people.

3. It creates job opportunities for people in fashion industry such as manufacturing, distribution and sewing.

4. It is a great source of income for people in weaving and designing.

5. It creates people’s ways of life.

6. It protects the body.

 

LESSON 3 – REVISION AND WEEKLY ASSESSMENT (TEST) 

 

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Teacher organizes the pupils in groups depending on the size of the class.

3. Teacher displays sample of traditional dresses (if available) or chart showing people wearing traditional dresses.

4. Teacher lets the pupils as groups identify and describe the people and dresses bases on ethnic groups or tribes.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils identify and describe bases on ethnic groups or tribes.

5. Teacher uses the samples or charts with the pupil’s relevant responses to introduce the lesson – meaning and importance traditional dresses.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils pay attention to the lesson introduction to understand the concept of lesson.

6. Teacher uses the foreign dresses to lead a class discussion on the meaning and importance of traditional dresses.

7. Teacher displays chart showing occasions where traditional dresses are used in Nigeria.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils state the most common occasions or places where traditional dresses are used in their communities.

8. Teacher used chart showing occasions where traditional fabrics and dresses are used to lead a class discussion on the importance of traditional dresses.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils analyze the importance of traditional dresses in their society.

9. Teacher summarizes the lesson on the board using appropriate lesson evaluation.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils participate actively the summary of the lesson by responding correctly to most of the questions and write as instructed.

 

 

CONCLUSION

To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
