CONTENT OF THE LESSON
INTRODUCTION
Nigeria is a country with many ethnic groups. These groups have different languages, cultures, traditions, and ways of life.
People from different ethnic groups live and work together across Nigeria. However, treating people unfairly because of their ethnic group can cause problems such as discrimination, conflict, and division.
In this lesson, pupils will learn about the meaning of ethnicity, ethnic groups in Nigeria, problems of ethnicity, and ways of promoting peace and unity among Nigerians.
LESSON 1 – MEANING OF ETHNICITY
Ethnicity means the identity of a group of people who share things such as language, culture, traditions, history, or ancestry.
Nigeria has many ethnic groups with different languages and cultures.
Examples of Ethnic Groups in Nigeria
Some major ethnic groups in Nigeria include:
1. Yoruba – An ethnic group mainly found in south-western Nigeria.
2. Hausa – An ethnic group mainly found in northern Nigeria.
3. Igbo – An ethnic group mainly found in south-eastern Nigeria.
4. Ijaw – An ethnic group mainly found in the Niger Delta region.
5. Kanuri – An ethnic group mainly found in north-eastern Nigeria.
6. Tiv – An ethnic group mainly found in Benue and nearby areas.

Ethnicity can become a problem when people treat members of other ethnic groups unfairly.
Some problems include:
1. Discrimination – treating people unfairly because of their ethnic group.
2. Ethnic conflict – fighting between different ethnic groups.
3. Lack of unity – people may put their ethnic group before the country.
4. Stereotyping – having unfair ideas about another ethnic group.
5. Nepotism – giving unfair preference to people from one’s own group.
6. Political division – ethnicity can sometimes cause disagreements in politics.

SUMMARY
