The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:

CONTENT OF THE LESSON
INTRODUCTORY ACTIVITIES
IDENTIFICATION OF HARMFUL SUBSTANCES – ROTTEN FOOD AND UNRIPE FRUITS
Pupil’s Activities – Examine the bread and discuss the effects of eating the bread.
Pupil’s response – This is a spoil bread and it is not safe for eating.
Teacher’s remarks – CORRECT. The bread is not safe for eating and it can be harmful to our body system. Any food, water, fruit or drug that are not safe for eating, drinking or using are called harmful substances. Engages pupils to explain harmful substances.
MEANING OF HARMFUL SUBSTANCES
Harmful substances are food, water, fruits or drugs that are unfit for human consumption.
EXAMPLES OF HARMFUL SUBSTANCES
1. Stale foods
2. Poorly cooked foods
3. Rotten foods
4. Infested foods
5. Expired foods
6. Expired drugs
7. Unripe fruits
8. Impure water.
WAYS OF PREVENTING INTAKE OF HARMFUL SUBSTANCES
1. Avoid eating stale, poorly cooked, dirty and infested foods.
2. Avoid taking expired food/drugs.
3. Take only drugs that are prescribed by the doctor/physician.
PRESENTATION
To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:
1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;
2. Leads the pupils in discussion to discover harmful substances when taken into human body.
Pupil’s Activities – Discover harmful substances when taken into human body.
3. Asks pupils to give examples of harmful substances.
Pupil’s Activities – Give examples of harmful substances.
Teacher’s Activities – Take pupils to local shops and markets to identify harmful substances in their environment.

- To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
