ENTRY BEHAVIOUR

Pupils have previously learned about Traditional Dance: Meaning of Dance and Materials Used for Traditional Dances. They understand that traditional dances are part of Nigerian culture and use special costumes, beads, drums, and other cultural materials.

This lesson builds on that knowledge by introducing pupils to Nigerian artworks, their meaning, classification, examples, importance, and uses in preserving Nigerian culture and traditions.

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:

1. Charts showing different Nigerian artworks

2. Samples or pictures of paintings, carvings, sculptures, pottery, weaving, and beadwork

3. Clay pots, woven baskets, or calabashes (where available)

4. Adire fabric or pictures of Adire designs

5. Drawing paper, pencils, crayons, and paints

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

INTRODUCTION

Nigeria is rich in culture and creativity. People from different parts of the country make beautiful artworks such as carvings, paintings, clay pots, woven baskets, and beadwork. These artworks are used to decorate homes, preserve culture, celebrate festivals, and show the talents of Nigerian artists.

In this lesson, pupils will learn the meaning of artworks and Nigerian artworks, the classification of artworks, examples of Nigerian artworks, and the importance and uses of artworks in everyday life.

LESSON 1 – MEANING OF ARTWORK

An artwork is anything made by an artist to express ideas, feelings, or culture. Artworks can be created by drawing, painting, carving, weaving, modelling, or other creative activities.

MEANING OF NIGERIAN ARTWORKS

Nigerian artworks are works of art made by Nigerian artists. They reflect the culture, traditions, beliefs, history, and way of life of the different ethnic groups in Nigeria.

CLASSIFICATION OF ARTWORKS

Artworks can be grouped into the following classes:

1. Drawing – Pictures made with pencils, crayons, charcoal, or pens.

2. Painting – Pictures made with paints and brushes.

3. Sculpture – Three-dimensional artworks made from clay, wood, stone, or metal.

4. Pottery – Bowls, pots, and other objects made from clay.

5. Weaving – Making cloth, baskets, mats, or other items by interlacing fibres.

6. Carving – Making objects by cutting wood, ivory, or stone into different shapes.

7. Printing – Producing designs or pictures by transferring ink onto paper or fabric.

EXAMPLES OF NIGERIAN ARTWORKS

Some common examples of Nigerian artworks include:

1. Wooden Carvings – Beautiful objects carved from wood, such as masks, statues, and stools.

2. Clay Pots – Pots and other containers made from clay for cooking, storing water, or decoration.

SUMMARY
