CONTENT OF THE LESSON

INTRODUCTION

Participating in a play means taking part in acting or performing a drama before an audience. Pupils act different roles and speak dialogues to entertain, educate, or teach moral lessons.

WAYS TO PARTICIPATE IN A PLAY

1. Acting as a character

EXAMPLE OF A SHORT PLAY

Title: Obedience Pays

Characters:

  • Mother
  • Chika
  • Teacher

Scene One

  • Mother: Chika, please sweep the room before going to school.
  • Chika: Yes, Mother. I will do it now.

Scene Two – In school

  • Teacher: Chika is always obedient and hardworking.
  • Chika: Thank you, ma.
  • Teacher: Good children obey their parents and teachers.

Moral Lesson – Obedience and hard work bring success and praise.

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson on writing plays and asks pupils if they have ever acted in a drama before.

Pupils’ Activities: The pupils respond to the teacher’s questions and share their experiences about acting in plays.

2. The teacher organizes the pupils into groups or pairs depending on the size of the class.

Pupils’ Activities: The pupils join their groups and prepare for the activity.

3. The teacher presents a short play and assigns roles to different pupils.

Pupils’ Activities: The pupils read and study their assigned roles carefully.

4. The teacher demonstrates how to read dialogues with correct expression, voice, and body movement.

Pupils’ Activities: The pupils imitate the teacher and practise speaking their lines clearly.

5. The teacher guides pupils to rehearse the play in groups.
