Information Technology (Computer Studies) – Primary 6 Weekly Short Class Lesson Notes for Second Term

WEEK 5 – TOPOLOGY

MEANING OF NETWORK TOPOLOGY

Network topology is the way computers are arranged or connected together in a network. It shows how computers are linked using cables or wireless connections.

TYPES OF NETWORK TOPOLOGY

1. Bus Topology – All computers are connected to one main cable. Data travels along the main cable. It is easy and cheap to set up. Example: A straight line connection.

2. Star Topology – All computers are connected to a central device (hub or switch). If one computer fails, others still work. It is the most common topology.

3. Ring Topology – Computers are connected in a circle shape. Data moves from one computer to another in a ring. If one computer fails, the network may stop.

4. Mesh Topology – Each computer is connected to many other computers. It is very strong and reliable. It is costly to set up.

5. Tree Topology – Computers are connected like a tree with branches. It is a combination of star and bus topology. It is used in large organisations.

IMPORTANCE OF NETWORK TOPOLOGY

1. It helps in organizing computer networks

2. It. akes communication easy.

3. It helps technicians to fix network problems.

4. It improves network performance.
