WEEK 4 – COMPUTER NETWORK AND REQUIREMENTS
MEANING OF COMPUTER NETWORK
A computer network is a group of two or more computers connected together to share information, files, and resources like printers and internet.
TYPES OF COMPUTER NETWORKS
1. Local Area Network (LAN) connects computers within a small area. Examples: school computer room, home, office. It is fast and cheap.
2. Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) connects computers within a city or town. Larger than LAN but smaller than Wan.
3. Wide Area Network (WAN) connects computers over a very large area. Examples: countries and the whole world. The internet is the best example of WAN
REQUIREMENTS FOR COMPUTER NETWORK
1. Computers – Two or more computers are needed to form a network.
2. Network Cables – They are used to connect computers together. Examples: LAN cable.
3. Network Devices – They are devices that help computers communicate. Examples: Router, Switch, Modem.
4. Network Interface Card (NIC) – It helps a computer to connect to a network.
5. Network Software – They are programs that control the network. Examples: Windows Network, Network drivers.
