CONTENT OF THE LESSON

INTRODUCTION

Nigeria is made up of many tribes and ethnic groups with different languages, cultures, traditions, and backgrounds. These groups are an important part of Nigeria’s cultural diversity.

Ethnicity means the shared identity and background of a group, while tribalism means unfair favour towards one’s own ethnic group. Tribes and ethnic groups should be respected and treated fairly.

In this lesson, pupils will learn about the similarities and differences between ethnicity and tribalism, and examples of tribes and ethnic groups in Nigeria.

LESSON 1 – (REVISION) MEANING OF ETHNICITY

Ethnicity is the identity of a group of people who share common culture, language, traditions, history, or background.

MEANING OF TRIBALISM

Tribalism is unfair favour towards one’s own ethnic group, especially when a person treats other groups unfairly.

SIMILARITIES BETWEEN ETHNICITY AND TRIBALISM

Ethnicity and tribalism are related because:

1. Both are connected to ethnic groups.

2. Both involve people’s culture and traditions.

3. Both can influence how people identify with a group.

4. Both can affect relationships between different groups.

5. Both may influence people’s attitudes towards other ethnic groups.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN ETHNICITY AND TRIBALISM

1. Ethnicity describes the shared identity and background of a group.

2. Tribalism means giving unfair preference to one’s own ethnic group.

3. Ethnicity is not necessarily harmful.

4. Tribalism can lead to discrimination, division, and conflict.

LESSON 2 – MEANING OF TRIBE

A tribe is a group of people who share a common culture, language, traditions, or ancestry.

Nigeria has many tribes and ethnic groups.

1. Yoruba – Mainly found in South-Western Nigeria.

2. Hausa – Mainly found in Northern Nigeria.

3. Igbo – Mainly found in South-Eastern Nigeria.

4. Ijaw – Mainly found in the Niger Delta region.

5. Kanuri – Mainly found in North-Eastern Nigeria.

6. Tiv – Mainly found in Benue State and parts of North-Central Nigeria.
