CONTENT OF THE LESSON

INTRODUCTION

Nigeria has many ethnic groups with different languages, cultures, and traditions. These differences are part of Nigeria’s diversity.

Ethnicity describes the shared identity of a group, while tribalism involves unfair favour towards one’s own ethnic group. When people refuse to respect or accept people from other ethnic groups, it can lead to tribal intolerance.

In this lesson, pupils will learn about the similarities and differences between ethnicity and tribalism, tribal intolerance, and ways of promoting tolerance and unity.

LESSON 1 – MEANING OF ETHNICITY

Ethnicity is the identity of a group of people who share common culture, language, traditions, history, or background.

MEANING OF TRIBALISM

Tribalism is unfair favour towards one’s own ethnic group, especially when a person treats other groups unfairly.

SIMILARITIES BETWEEN ETHNICITY AND TRIBALISM

Ethnicity and tribalism are related because:

1. Both are connected to ethnic groups.

2. Both involve people’s culture, language, and traditions.

3. Both can influence how people identify with a group.

4. Both can affect relationships between different groups.

5. When badly handled, they can lead to division and conflict.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN ETHNICITY AND TRIBALISM

LESSON 2 – MEANING OF TRIBAL INTOLERANCE

Tribal intolerance means refusing to accept, respect, or live peacefully with people from other ethnic groups.

For example, insulting someone or refusing to work with them simply because they belong to another ethnic group is tribal intolerance.

EFFECTS OF TRIBAL INTOLERANCE

Tribal intolerance can lead to:
