This lesson builds on that knowledge by teaching pupils about the meaning of identity, ethnicity, and tribalism and how tribalism can affect peaceful co-existence.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON
INTRODUCTION
Every person has an identity that helps others know who they are. People may have different languages, cultures, traditions, and backgrounds.
Ethnicity describes the shared identity of a group, while tribalism occurs when people unfairly favour their own ethnic group over others.
In this lesson, pupils will learn the meaning of identity, ethnicity, and tribalism, as well as the importance of treating people from all ethnic groups fairly.
LESSON 1 – MEANING OF IDENTITY
Identity is the way a person or group is known by their name, culture, language, traditions, or background.
For example, a person may identify with a particular ethnic group because of their language, culture, or family background.
MEANING OF TRIBALISM
Tribalism is showing strong support or favour towards one’s own ethnic or tribal group, sometimes at the expense of other groups.
For example, choosing someone for a job only because they belong to the same ethnic group is an example of tribalism.
MEANING OF ETHNICITY
Ethnicity is the identity of a group of people who share common culture, language, traditions, history, or ancestry.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ETHNICITY AND TRIBALISM
1. Ethnicity describes the identity and shared background of a group.
