CONTENT OF THE LESSON

INTRODUCTION

People can become sick when germs spread from one person, animal, food, water, or insects to another. Understanding how diseases spread helps us know how to protect ourselves and others from becoming ill.

In this lesson, pupils will learn the ways diseases are spread, examples of diseases, their symptoms, and the ways to prevent their spread.

LESSON 1 – MEANING OF THE SPREAD OF DISEASES

The spread of diseases is the process by which diseases are passed from one person, animal, or source to another.

WAYS DISEASES ARE SPREAD WITH EXAMPLES

1. Through Air

Some diseases spread when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks.

Examples:

  • Common cold

3. Through Direct Contact

Touching an infected person or sharing personal items can spread diseases.

Examples:

  • Ringworm
  • Chickenpox

4. Through Insect Bites

Some insects carry germs and spread diseases when they bite people.

Examples:

  • Malaria (spread by mosquitoes)
  • Yellow fever (spread by mosquitoes)

5. Through Dirty Surroundings

Living in an unclean environment encourages the spread of germs.

Examples:

  • Cholera
  • Typhoid fever

LESSON 2 – SYMPTOMS OF COMMON DISEASES

1. Malaria

  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Body weakness
  • Chills
  • Vomiting

  • Weakness

4. Common Cold

  • Runny nose
  • Sneezing
  • Cough
  • Sore throat

5. Ringworm

Itchy, round skin rash

Red patches on the skin

LESSON 3 – WAYS TO PREVENT THE SPREAD OF DISEASES

1. Wash hands regularly with soap and clean water.

2. Drink clean and safe water.

3. Eat properly cooked and clean food.

SUMMARY

In this lesson, pupils learned that the spread of diseases is the process by which diseases are passed from one person, animal, or source to another.

They also learned the common ways diseases are spread, which include:

  • Through air
  • Through contaminated food and water
  • Through direct contact with infected people or objects
  • Through insect bites
  • Through dirty surroundings

Pupils identified some common diseases and their symptoms, such as:

  • Malaria – fever, headache, body weakness, chills, and vomiting.
  • Cholera – severe diarrhoea, vomiting, dehydration, and weakness.
  • Typhoid fever – high fever, stomach pain, headache, and loss of appetite.
  • Common cold – cough, sneezing, runny nose, and sore throat.
  • Ringworm – itchy, round skin rash.

Finally, pupils understood that practising good personal hygiene, drinking clean water, eating safe food, keeping the environment clean, using mosquito nets, and covering the mouth when coughing or sneezing are important ways to prevent the spread of diseases and maintain good health.

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

Step 1: Introduction – The teacher asks pupils to mention some common diseases they know and how people become infected.

Pupils’ Activities: Pupils mention common diseases and discuss how they think diseases spread.

Step 2: Meaning of the Spread of Diseases – The teacher explains the meaning of the spread of diseases and how pathogens move from one person or source to another.

Pupils’ Activities: Pupils explain the meaning of the spread of diseases in their own words.

Step 3: Ways Diseases Are Spread – The teacher explains the different ways diseases are spread:

  • Through air
  • Through contaminated food and water
  • Through direct contact
  • Through insect bites
  • Through dirty surroundings

The teacher gives examples for each method.

Pupils’ Activities: Pupils identify and explain the different ways diseases spread.

Step 4: Common Diseases and Their Symptoms – The teacher explains the symptoms of common diseases such as malaria, cholera, typhoid fever, common cold, and ringworm.

Pupils’ Activities: Pupils identify the symptoms of the diseases discussed.

Step 5: Prevention of the Spread of Diseases – The teacher discusses ways to prevent the spread of diseases, including good personal hygiene, eating clean food, drinking safe water, keeping the environment clean, and sleeping under mosquito nets.

Pupils’ Activities: Pupils mention and discuss ways to prevent the spread of diseases.

Step 6: Group Activity – The teacher divides pupils into groups and gives each group a disease to discuss. Each group explains:

  • How the disease spreads.
  • Its symptoms.
  • Ways to prevent it.

Pupils’ Activities: Pupils work together and present their findings to the class.

Step 7: Lesson Summary – The teacher reviews the meaning of the spread of diseases, the ways diseases spread, common symptoms, and preventive measures.

Pupils’ Activities: Pupils summarize the lesson by answering oral questions.

Step 8: Evaluation – The teacher asks oral and written questions to assess pupils’ understanding of the lesson.

Pupils’ Activities: Pupils answer the questions and participate actively in the lesson evaluation.

CONCLUSION

To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
