CONTENT OF THE LESSON

INTRODUCTION 

A verb is an action word or a doing word. It shows what a person, animal, or thing does. For examples – run, eat, sing, write

TYPES OF VERB FORMS

1. FINITE VERBS

Finite verbs are verbs that show tense and agree with the subject in a sentence.

Examples

1. She plays football.

2. They went to school.

3. I am reading a book.

Note: Finite verbs change according to time and subject.

2. INFINITE (NON-FINITE) VERBS

Infinite verbs do not show tense by themselves.

Examples

1. To read is important.

2. She likes to dance.

3. Running is good exercise.

TYPES OF NON-FINITE VERBS 

1. Infinitive → to eat, to write

2. Gerund → reading, singing

3. Participle → broken, dancing

3. REGULAR VERBS

Regular verbs form their past tense by adding -d or -ed.

Present   Past

1. walk   walked

2. play   played

3. jump   jumped

4. clean   cleaned

Sentences

1. I played football yesterday.

2. She cleaned the room.

4. IRREGULAR VERBS

Irregular verbs do not form their past tense by simply adding -ed.

Present   Past

1. go   went

2. eat   ate

3. sing   sang

4. write   wrote

Sentences

1. We went to school early.

2. He ate rice for lunch.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN REGULAR AND IRREGULAR VERBS

Regular Verbs – – – Irregular Verbs

1. Add -ed or -d in the past tense – – – Change differently in the past tense

2. walk → walked – – – go → went

3. play → played – – – eat → ate

EXAMPLES OF VERB FORMS IN SENTENCES

1. The boy runs fast. (Finite verb)

2. To learn is important. (Infinite verb)

3. She washed the clothes. (Regular verb)

4. They saw a bird. (Irregular verb)

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions about action words and sentence construction.

Pupils’ Activities: The pupils respond to the teacher’s questions and give examples of verbs.

2. The teacher organizes the pupils into groups or pairs depending on the size of the class.

Pupils’ Activities: Each pupil belongs to a group.

3. The teacher displays charts containing examples of finite, infinite, regular, and irregular verbs for the pupils to identify and classify.

Pupils’ Activities: The pupils identify and classify the verbs correctly.

4. The teacher uses the charts/flashcards and the pupils’ responses to introduce the lesson and explain the meaning and types of verb forms.

Pupils’ Activities: The pupils pay attention to the lesson introduction, understand, and explain the meaning and types of verb forms in their own words.

5. The teacher guides the pupils on how to use finite and infinite verbs correctly in sentences.

Pupils’ Activities: The pupils follow the teacher’s guidance to form correct sentences using finite and infinite verbs.

6. The teacher explains the differences between regular and irregular verbs and gives more examples for clarification.

Pupils’ Activities: The pupils understand the differences and confidently respond to practice exercises.

7. The teacher summarizes the lesson on the board and gives appropriate evaluation.
