This lesson builds on that knowledge by introducing volleyball, another team sport in which players work together by serving, passing, setting, spiking, blocking, and digging to keep the ball in play and score points.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

INTRODUCTION

Have you ever watched people hitting a ball over a net without allowing it to touch the ground? That game is called volleyball. It is an exciting team game that requires teamwork, concentration, quick movement, and good ball control.

In this lesson, pupils will learn the meaning of volleyball and the basic skills needed to play the game successfully.

LESSON 1 – MEANING OF VOLLEYBALL

Volleyball is a team game in which two teams hit a ball over a net, trying to make it land on the opponent’s side of the court while preventing it from touching their own side.

BASIC SKILLS INVOLVED IN VOLLEYBALL

1. Serving – Hitting the ball over the net to start the game.

2. Passing – Receiving and directing the ball to a teammate using the forearms.

3. Setting – Pushing the ball upward with the fingertips to prepare for an attack.

4. Spiking – Hitting the ball forcefully over the net into the opponent’s court.

5. Blocking – Jumping near the net to stop or return the opponent’s spike.

6. Digging – Preventing the ball from touching the ground after an opponent’s attack by using the forearms or hands.

LESSON 2 AND LESSON 3 – FIELD EXERCISE 

PRACTICAL DEMONSTRATION OF VOLLEYBALL BASIC SKILLS 

The teacher demonstrates each volleyball skill before allowing pupils to practise.

1. Serving

  • Hold the volleyball with one hand.
  • Toss the ball gently into the air.
  • Hit the ball with the other hand over the net.
  • Aim the ball into the opponent’s court.

2. Passing

  • Stand with feet slightly apart.
  • Join both hands together.
  • Use the forearms to hit the ball.
  • Direct the ball to a teammate.

3. Setting

  • Raise both hands above the forehead.
  • Spread the fingers comfortably.
  • Push the ball upward gently with the fingertips.
  • Send the ball to a teammate for an attack.

4. Spiking

  • Take a few quick steps towards the ball.
  • Jump up.
  • Hit the ball strongly with one hand over the net.
  • Land safely on both feet.

5. Blocking

  • Stand close to the net.
  • Jump with both hands raised above the head.
  • Try to stop the opponent’s ball from crossing the net.
  • Land safely after blocking.

6. Digging

  • Bend the knees slightly.
  • Keep the eyes on the ball.
  • Join the hands together.
  • Use the forearms to lift the ball before it touches the ground.

GROUP PRACTICAL ACTIVITIES

The teacher divides the pupils into small groups and asks each group to:
