ENTRY BEHAVIOUR

Pupils have previously learned the meaning of basketball and the basic basketball skills such as dribbling, passing, catching, shooting, pivoting, rebounding, and defending.

This lesson builds on that knowledge by teaching pupils about the officials who supervise basketball games, the rules and regulations that guide the game, and the different positions of players on the basketball court. This will help them understand how basketball games are organized and played fairly.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

INTRODUCTION

Have you ever watched a basketball game and noticed the people blowing whistles and making decisions? They are called basketball officials. Their job is to ensure that players obey the rules and that the game is fair. Every player also has a special position and responsibility on the court.

In this lesson, pupils will learn about the basketball officials and their duties, the basic officiating rules and regulations, and the positions of players on the basketball court. This knowledge will help them understand and play basketball correctly.

BASKETBALL OFFICIALS AND THEIR DUTIES

1. Referee – The referee is the chief official. The referee starts the game, enforces the rules, and makes final decisions during the game.

2. Umpire – The umpire assists the referee by watching the players and ensuring that the rules are followed.

3. Scorekeeper – The scorekeeper records the points scored, fouls, and other important details during the game.

4. Timekeeper – The timekeeper keeps track of the playing time, time-outs, and breaks during the game.

5. Shot Clock Operator – The shot clock operator controls the shot clock and ensures that each team takes a shot within the allowed time.

OFFICIATING RULES AND REGULATIONS OF BASKETBALL

1. The game is played between two teams of five players each.

2. The ball must be dribbled while moving.

3. Players must not push, hold, or trip opponents.

4. The ball must stay within the court boundaries.

5. A basket scored from inside the three-point line counts as 2 points.

6. A basket scored from outside the three-point line counts as 3 points.

7. A free throw counts as 1 point.

8. Players should obey the referee’s decisions.

9. Fair play and teamwork should be encouraged.

10. Unsporting behaviour is not allowed.

POSITIONS OF PLAYERS ON THE COURT

1. Point Guard – The point guard controls the ball and directs the team’s attack.

2. Shooting Guard – The shooting guard is responsible for scoring points, especially by shooting.

3. Small Forward – The small forward attacks, defends, and supports both guards and taller players.

4. Power Forward – The power forward plays near the basket, rebounds the ball, and scores close-range baskets.

5. Centre – The centre is usually the tallest player. The centre protects the basket, rebounds missed shots, and scores near the basket.
