CONTENT OF THE LESSON
INTRODUCTION
Many places such as schools, banks, hospitals, offices, and homes have more than one computer. These computers are often connected so they can share files, printers, internet access, and other resources. This connection is called a computer network.
In this lesson, pupils will learn the meaning of a computer network, the different types of computer networks, the requirements needed to set up a network, and the importance of networking in everyday life.
LESSON 1 – MEANING OF A COMPUTER NETWORK
A computer network is a system in which two or more computers and other devices are connected together to communicate, share information, exchange data, and share resources such as printers, files, software, and internet access.
A computer network makes communication faster and allows users to work together efficiently.
EXAMPLES OF PLACES WHERE COMPUTER NETWORKS ARE USED
Areas where Computer Networks are used:
1. Schools – To connect computers in classrooms, computer laboratories, libraries, and administrative offices for learning and sharing information.
2. Hospitals – To store and share patients’ medical records, test results, and other healthcare information.
3. Banks – To connect different branches, process financial transactions, and provide online banking services.
4. Offices – To enable employees to share files, printers, internet access, and communicate efficiently.
5. Libraries – To manage book records, provide internet access, and help users search for books electronically.
6. Airports – To manage flight schedules, ticket bookings, passenger information, and airport operations.
7. Hotels – To handle guest reservations, billing, internet services, and communication between departments.
8. Government Offices – To share official information, manage public records, and improve communication among departments.
9. Business Organisations – To support communication, file sharing, online transactions, inventory management, and teamwork.

TYPES OF COMPUTER NETWORK
Computer networks are grouped according to the size of the area they cover.
1. Local Area Network (LAN)
A Local Area Network (LAN) is a network that connects computers within a small geographical area, such as:
- A classroom
- A school
- An office
- A home
Characteristics of LAN:
- It covers a small area.
- It has high speed.
- It is easy to install and maintain.
- It is used within one building or nearby buildings.
2. Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)
A Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) connects computers across a city or town.
Examples:
- Banks with branches within a city.
- Government offices within the same city.
- Universities with campuses in different parts of a city.
Characteristics of MAN:
- It covers a city or metropolitan area.
- It is larger than a LAN but smaller than a WAN.
- It connects several LANs.
3. Wide Area Network (WAN)
A Wide Area Network (WAN) connects computers across countries or continents.
The Internet is the largest example of a WAN.
Examples:
- The Internet
- International banks
- Multinational companies
Characteristics of WAN:
- It covers a very large geographical area.
- It connects many LANs and MANs.
- It uses communication technologies such as satellites and fibre-optic cables.
LESSON 2 – REQUIREMENTS OF A COMPUTER NETWORK
To set up a computer network, the following are required:
1. Computers – At least two or more computers are needed.
2. Network Interface Card (NIC) – A Network Interface Card (NIC) enables a computer to connect to a network.
3. Network Cable (Ethernet Cable) – A network cable is used to connect computers in a wired network.
4. Switch or Hub – A switch or hub connects multiple computers in the same network.
5. Router – A router connects different networks and provides access to the Internet.
6. Wireless Access Point (Wi-Fi) – A wireless access point allows devices to connect to the network without cables.
7. Network Software – Network software enables computers to communicate and share resources.

SUMMARY
