LEARNING OBJECTIVES
By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:
1. Explain the meaning of digestion.
2. Describe the process of digestion of food.
3. Identify the main digestive organs.
5. State the functions of digestive organs.
6. Explain the importance of digestion to healthy living.
ENTRY BEHAVIOUR
Pupils have previously learned about food, classes of food, balanced diet, harmful food, and good feeding habits.
This lesson builds on that knowledge by helping pupils understand that after eating food, the body must digest and absorb the nutrients before they can be used for growth, energy, and good health. Pupils will also learn about the organs responsible for digestion.
INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS
The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:
1. Chart of the digestive system
2. Diagram of digestive organs
3. Pictures of digestive organs
4. Textbooks and charts
METHOD OF TEACHING
Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.
Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON
INTRODUCTION
Whenever we eat food, the body must break it down into smaller parts before it can be used. This process is called digestion.
LESSON 1 – MEANING OF DIGESTION
Digestion is the process of breaking down food into simple substances that can be absorbed and used by the body.
DIGESTION OF FOOD
The digestion of food begins in the mouth and continues through different organs of the digestive system.
Process of Digestion
1. Food is chewed in the mouth.
2. Food passes through the oesophagus (food pipe).
3. Food enters the stomach where it is mixed and broken down further.
4. Digested food moves to the small intestine where nutrients are absorbed.
5. Undigested food passes to the large intestine.
6. Waste materials leave the body through the anus.
LESSON 2 – DIGESTIVE ORGANS
Main Digestive Organs
Mouth
⇓
Oesophagus (Food Pipe)
⇓
Stomach
⇓
Small Intestine
⇓
Large Intestine
⇓
Rectum
⇓
Anus
1. MOUTH
The mouth is the opening through which food enters the body.
Functions (Uses):
- It eeceives food into the body.
- It chews food into smaller pieces.
- It mixes food with saliva to aid digestion.
2. OESOPHAGUS (FOOD PIPE)
The oesophagus is a tube that connects the mouth to the stomach.
Functions (Uses):
- It carries food from the mouth to the stomach.
- It helps food move through the digestive system.
3. STOMACH
The stomach is a bag-like organ where food is stored and mixed.
Functions (Uses):
- It stores food for a short time.
- It mixes and breaks down food.
- It begins further digestion of food.
4. SMALL INTESTINE
The small intestine is a long, narrow tube connected to the stomach.
Functions (Uses):
- It completes digestion of food.
- It absorbs nutrients from digested food into the blood.
- It supplies nutrients needed for growth and energy.
5. LARGE INTESTINE
The large intestine is a wider tube connected to the small intestine.
Functions (Uses):
- It absorbs water from undigested food.
- It forms solid waste (faeces).
- It helps maintain water balance in the body.
6. RECTUM
The rectum is the lower part of the large intestine.
Functions (Uses):
- It stores faeces before it is removed from the body.
7. ANUS
The anus is the opening at the end of the digestive system.
Functions (Uses):
- Removes waste materials (faeces) from the body.
LESSON 3 – IMPORTANCE OF DIGESTION TO HEALTHY HUMAN BEINGS
1. It helps the body obtain nutrients from food.
2. It provides energy for daily activities.
3. It supports growth and development.
4. It helps repair worn-out body tissues.
5. It keeps the body healthy and strong.
WEEKLY ASSESSMENT: TEST QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS/ASSIGNMENT

They also learned the main digestive organs, which are: Mouth, Oesophagus (Food Pipe), Stomach, etc.
Pupils were taught the functions of each digestive organ and the pathway food follows through the digestive system.
Finally, they learned the importance of digestion, which includes: Providing nutrients to the body, Supplying energy for daily activities, etc.
Overall, the lesson helps pupils understand how the digestive system works to keep the body healthy and strong.
