WEEK 3 – STRUCTURE WORK: HOMONYMS
MEANING OF HOMONYMS
Homonyms are words that have the same spelling or pronunciation but different meanings.
EXAMPLES OF HOMONYMS AND THEIR MEANINGS
1. Bat
Bat (an animal): A bat flew out at night.
Bat (sports equipment): He hit the ball with a bat.
2. Bank
Bank (financial place): My mother went to the bank to save money.
Bank (side of a river): We sat on the bank of the river.
3. Can
Can (container): She opened a can of milk.
Can (ability): I can read very well.
4. Match
Match (for lighting fire): He used a match to light the candle.
Match (game): We watched a football match.
5. Park
Park (recreation place): Children played in the park.
Park (to stop a car): Please park the car here.
6. Right
Right (correct): Your answer is right.
Right (direction): Turn right at the junction.
7. Light
Light (not heavy): The bag is light.
Light (brightness): Switch on the light.
8. Ring
Ring (jewellery): She wore a gold ring.
Ring (sound): I heard the bell ring.
SUMMARY
