WEEK 3 – WRITING: ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY

WRITING AN ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY

An argumentative essay is a type of writing where the writer gives opinions, reasons, and evidence to support one side of an issue or debate.

 

EXAMPLES OF ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY TOPICS

1. Democracy or Military Rule

2. Should pupils wear school uniforms?

3. Is reading better than watching TV?

TIPS FOR WRITING AN ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY

1. Choose a topic – Pick a topic you understand well. Make sure it can be argued for or against.

2. Decide your position – Decide which side you are supporting (for or against).

3. Plan your essay – Think about 3–4 strong reasons to support your opinion. Prepare examples to explain your points.

4. Write an introduction – Introduce the topic clearly. State your opinion at the end of the introduction.

5. Write the Body – Each paragraph should have one main point. Explain your point with examples or evidence.

6. Write a conclusion – Summarize your main points. Restate your opinion clearly.

 

GUIDELINES FOR WRITING ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY

1. Use simple and clear language.

2. Make sure your essay has an introduction, body, and conclusion.

3. Use linking words like because, therefore, however, also.

4. Stay on topic and do not write irrelevant ideas.

5.. Check your essay for spelling and punctuation errors.

 

EXAMPLE OUTLINE: Democracy or Military Rule

1. Introduction: Some people prefer democracy, while others think military rule is better. I believe democracy is better because it allows people to choose their leaders and enjoy freedom.

2. Body Paragraph 1: In democracy, citizens vote for leaders. This gives everyone a voice in the government.

3. Body Paragraph 2: Democracy allows people to express their opinions freely. Military rule does not allow this.

4. Body Paragraph 3: Democracy encourages peace and fairness. People are more likely to respect the laws.

5. Conclusion: For these reasons, democracy is better than military rule. It gives freedom, fairness, and the chance to choose leaders.
