CONTENT OF THE LESSON

INTRODUCTION

Dance is an important part of Nigerian culture and is performed during festivals, ceremonies, celebrations, religious activities, and entertainment programmes. Nigeria has produced many talented dancers who have promoted the country’s culture both locally and internationally.

In this lesson, pupils will learn the meaning of dance, the different forms of dance, notable Nigerian dancers and their contributions to national development, and how to perform a simple dance using the correct rhythm, coordination, and confidence.

LESSON 1 – MEANING OF DANCE

Dance is the movement of the body, usually to music or rhythm, for the purpose of expression, communication, worship, entertainment, exercise, or celebration.

TYPES (FORMS) OF DANCE

The major forms of dance include:

1. Traditional Dance – Cultural dances performed during festivals, ceremonies, and celebrations.

2. Contemporary Dance – A modern style of dance that combines different dance techniques.

3. Ballet – A graceful and highly disciplined dance form performed with special techniques.

4. Hip-hop Dance – An energetic modern dance style often performed to hip-hop music.

5. Social Dance – Dances performed mainly for recreation and social gatherings.

6. Religious Dance – Dances performed during religious worship and ceremonies.

LESSON 3 – DANCE PERFORMANCE

Dance performance is the presentation of a dance before an audience to entertain, educate, communicate ideas, express emotions, celebrate culture, or mark special occasions. It involves dancers performing planned dance movements in rhythm with music or other sounds before spectators.

Characteristics of a Good Dance Performance

A good dance performance requires:

1. Proper Costume: Dancers should wear costumes that suit the type of dance and allow free movement.

2. Correct Rhythm and Timing: Dancers should move in time with the music and maintain a steady rhythm throughout the performance.

3. Good Body Coordination: Every part of the body should move smoothly and in harmony with the dance steps.

4. Appropriate Facial Expression: Dancers should use suitable facial expressions to communicate the mood and meaning of the dance.

5. Teamwork: Group dancers should cooperate, move together, and support one another to achieve a well-coordinated performance.

6. Confidence: Dancers should perform boldly without fear or shyness to engage the audience.

7. Respect for the Audience and Fellow Performers: Dancers should show good manners by respecting the audience, following instructions, and treating fellow performers with courtesy and cooperation.

SUMMARY

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:
