2. identify and appreciate the functions of traditional rulers in our communities.

3. understand the importance of tradition festivals.

The children can identify some of the traditional musical instruments.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

MEANING OF MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS, RULERS AND FESTIVALS

TRADITIONAL MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS 

Traditional musical instruments are musical devices that produce musical sound by shaking, hitting, rubbing, blowing, beating or plucking.

 

EXAMPLES OF TRADITIONAL MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS 

1. Shaking – Shekere

2. Hitting – Agogo, gangan,

3. Blowing – Opi, oja, horn, kakaki, etc.

4. Beating – Banjo, tabla baya, bata drum (beating and hitting), khanajira, djemba and udu commonly known as pot.

 

TRADITIONAL RULERS 

Traditional rulers are leaders in communities who maintains peace and guides the people. They maintain peace and order, settling disputes among their people and preserving cultural heritage.

 

EXAMPLES OF TRADITIONAL RULERS 

1. The Oba and Oloye – Traditional rulers are Oba and Oloye in Yorubaland. They are commonly called in English as King and chiefs.

2. Obi in Igboland

3. Sarki in Hausaland which is mostly referred as Emir in English.

 

TRADITIONAL FESTIVALS 

Traditional festivals are special rites and celebration that people in a community observed from time to time. Traditional celebrations are mostly observed every years or when the need arises.

 

EXAMPLES OF TRADITIONAL FESTIVALS 

1. Egungun festival in Yoruba. For example, eyo in Lagos State.

2. Yam festival

3. Egungun festival commonly called masquerade festival

4. Argungu (fishermen) festival

5. Osun Osogbo festival

6. Oro festival

 

LESSON PRESENTATION

To deliver this lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson based on what he/she has taught or what the children have learnt, then adopts the following steps:

1. Teacher displays chart showing traditional musical instruments, rulers and festivals in Nigeria.

Children’s Activities – The children identify and describe some of the traditional musical instruments, rulers and festivals in Nigeria.

2. Teacher point to each traditional musical instruments, rulers and festivals in Nigeria for the children to identify, describe or demonstrate.

Children’s Activities – The children identify and describe traditional musical instruments, rulers and festivals in Nigeria.

4. Teacher uses the chart and the children’s relevant responses to introduce the lesson and explains the meaning and examples of traditional musical instruments, rulers and festivals in Nigeria. 

Children’s Activities – The children pay attention to the lesson introduction, understand the meaning of traditional musical instruments, rulers and festivals in Nigeria.

5. Teacher summarizes the lesson by asking the children questions based on the lesson taught and gives the children work to do at home.
