PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES
By the end of the lesson, the pupils should have attained the following objectives –
1. with appropriate examples, discus the meaning and types of waste.
2. explain the meaning of waste disposal.
3. list and explain types of waste disposal.
4. differentiate between sewage and refuse disposal.
ENTRY BEHAVIOR
The pupils can identify waste and how to dispose waste.
INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS
The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of posters, charts, dustin, waste paper basket.
METHOD OF TEACHING
Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.
Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON
LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION
Most waste around us is created by humans, including everyone in this classroom.
Waste is unwanted or unusable materials or substances.
There is so much waste around us and much of it could harm our health.
However, much of it still has some value.
TYPES OF WASTE
There are five (5) types of waste –
1. Liquid waste
2. Solid waste
3. Organic waste
4. Recyclable waste
5. Hazardous Waste
LIQUID WASTE
Liquid waste refers to all waste water, oil, grease, waste detergents, and dirty water that have been thrown away.
SOLID WASTE
Solid waste is any garbage, sludge, refuse, glass and ceramics, plastic waste, paper rubbish, and metals at home, in the school, industrial and commercial locations.
ORGANIC WASTE
Organic waste refers to waste or rotten food, fruits, meat, garden, decay grass or trees.
RECYCLABLE WASTE
Recyclable waste is waste that can be reused. For examples – furniture, organic waste, etc.
HAZARDOUS WASTE
Hazardous waste is any waste material that is flammable, corrosive, toxic and reactive materials.
This type of waste pose a threat to our environment.
LESSON 2 – MEANING OF WASTE DISPOSAL
Waste disposal is the removal of waste materials that are harmful to health.
TYPES OF WASTE DISPOSAL
1. Sewage disposal
2. Refuse disposal
Other are – Oil waste, Gaseous waste, Domestic waste, Commercial waste, Agricultural waste, Industrial waste and Radioactive waste.
SEWAGE WASTE DISPOSAL
Sewage waste is the removal of faeces or dirty water from our home and its surroundings.
METHOD SEWAGE DISPOSAL
1. Pit latrine
2 Bucket latrine
3. Trench latrine
4. Water system
REFUSE DISPOSAL
Refuse disposal is the removal any form of refuse from our home and its surroundings.
METHOD SEWAGE WASTE DISPOSAL
1. Incineration
2. Land fill
3. Dumps
LESSON 3 – IMPORTANCE OF WASTE DISPOSAL
1. It prevent breeding of insects, germs, files, rats, etc.
2. It prevents bad odour.
3. It prevents spread of sickness and diseases.
4. It prevents environmental pollution.
PRESENTATION
To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:
1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;
2. Displays a waste basket.
3. Asks pupils to discuss in group or pair identify and state the uses of waste basket.
Pupil’s Activities – Identify the object as waste basket and state its uses.
4. Uses pupil’s responses and the waste basket to introduce the lesson – waste.
5. Explains the meaning of waste with appropriate examples.
Pupil’s Activities – Pay attention to the lesson introduction and take active part in discussing the meaning of waste with appropriate examples.
6. Takes the pupils out for a walk with the school to identify different liquid, solid, organic and recyclable waste.
Pupil’s Activities – Identify different types of waste within the school community.
7. Leads a discussion on all the identified waste and hazardous waste.
8. Displays chart showing different types of waste disposal.
9. Asks pupils to identify the waste disposal they know and describe.
Pupil’s Activities – Identify the common waste disposal in their community.
10. Uses the chart and pupil’s responses to introduce the lesson – types of waste disposal.
11. Leads a discussion on the meaning and types of waste disposal.
Pupil’s Activities – Pay attention to the lesson introduction and take active part in discussing the meaning and types of waste disposal.
12. Guides to practice and demonstrate how to remove waste with the common and familiar methods.
Pupil’s Activities – Practice and demonstrate how to remove waste with the common and familiar methods.
13. Asks pupils in groups or pairs to analyze the importance of waste disposal in our home, at school and community.
