LEARNING OBJECTIVES 

By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

1. Explain the meaning of tense.

2. Identify different types of tenses.

3. Use present, past, and future tenses correctly.

4. Change sentences from one tense to another.

5. Construct simple sentences using different tenses.

ENTRY BEHAVIOUR

The pupils already know how to form simple sentences. This lesson helps them understand how verbs change to show time.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

INTRODUCTION

A tense is the form of a verb that shows the time an action takes place.

Tenses tell us whether an action happens:

• Now (Present Tense)

• In the past (Past Tense)

• In the future (Future Tense)

TYPES OF TENSES

1. Present Tense

Used to describe actions happening now or regularly.

Examples:

• I play football.

• She goes to school.

• They read books.

2. Past Tense

Used to describe actions that happened before now.

Examples:

• I played football.

• She went to school.

• They read books yesterday.

3. Future Tense

Used to describe actions that will happen later.

Examples:

• I will play football.

• She will go to school.

• They will read books.

EXAMPLES OF VERBS CHANGES

Present – Past – Future

• play – played – will play

• go – went – will go

• eat – ate – will eat

• write – wrote – will write

• read – read – will read

SUMMARY

Pupils learned that tenses show the time an action takes place. They reviewed the present, past, and future tenses and practised using them correctly in sentences.

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. The teacher introduces the lesson by asking pupils questions:

• What did you do yesterday?

• What are you doing now?

• What will you do tomorrow?

Pupils’ Activities: The pupils respond to the questions using simple sentences.

2. The teacher explains that a tense shows the time an action takes place.

7. The teacher guides pupils to change sentences from present tense to past and future tenses.
