CONTENTS OF THE LESSON
FOCUS LESSONS
MEANING OF ENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCES
Environmental resource are valuable resources in the environment that are useful and valuable to man, plants and animals.
These resources include the subsoil resources (mineral and energy), soil resources, biological resources, water resources and land.
TYPES OF ENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCES
1. Atmospheric resources (e.g. sun, wind, biomass, oxygen and other gases, rain, etc.)
2. Water resources (e.g. waterfalls, plants, fishes and other water animals, etc.)
3. Vegetation (e.g. timber, roots, leaves, barks, latex, fruits, fibres, etc.
4. Mineral resources (e.g. non-renewable and include metals such as iron, copper, and aluminum) and non-metals such as salt, gypsum, clay, sand, phosphates).
5. Land resources (e.g. the underground water, the various minerals like coal, bauxite, gold and other raw materials.)
6. Human resources
ATMOSPHERIC RESOURCES
The atmosphere resources are made of gases ( such as sun, wind, biomass, oxygen and other gases, rain, etc.) that are essential for photosynthesis and other life activities.
WATER RESOURCES
Water resources include waterfalls, plants, fishes and other water animals, etc. that are valuable to man such as providing seafood, safe drinking water, irrigation, etc.
VEGETATION RESOURCES
Vegetation resources are key components of an ecosystem that regulate various biogeochemical cycles such as water, carbon and nitrogen. It also forms the base of all food chains and soil production.
MINERAL RESOURCES
Mineral resources are economic resources that are used for production. For examples – iron, copper,, aluminum, etc.
LAND RESOURCES
Land resources including the physical (socioeconomic resources such as infrastructure) and natural resources such as vegetation water, air, minerals, etc.
HUMAN RESOURCES
Human resources are both physical and mental resources used managing every other resources.
IMPORTANCE OF ENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCES
1. It is the storehouse of all resources that are necessary to sustain life.
2. It provides us food, water, oxygen, shelter, medicines, and other necessities.
LESSON PRESENTATION
TEACHER’S ACTIVITIES
The teacher,
1. uses pictures, charts and maps to explain the meaning of environmental resources.
2. initiates and guides discussions on:
I. types of resources;
II. components of each type of environmental resources;
III. quality of human resources in relation to size, skilled and unskilled human resources, education and heath, etc;
IV. uses and importance of environmental resources.
3. summarizes the highlights of the lesson on the board.
STUDENT’S ACTIVITIES
The students,
1. listen to the teacher, ask and answered questions, take down notes.
2. participate in class discussions.
3. draw a table indicating the types of resources, components of the resources and their uses.
LESSON EVALUATION
Teacher asks students to,
1. explain the concept of environmental resources with examples.
2. group environmental resources into different types;
3. identify the components of the different types of environmental resources;
4. describe the factor that affect the quality of human resources.
5. state the importance of environmental resources.
