ELECTORAL SYSTEM OR ELECTORAL PROCESS
An electoral system is also known as voting process. It is a set of rules and regulations that determine how elections and referendums are conducted. The whole system includes parties registration, voter registration, political campaign, accreditations, voting and declaration of results and dispute resolution.
TYPES OF ELECTORAL SYSTEM
The following are types of electoral system,
1. Simple majority system
2. Absolute majority system
3. Second ballot system/run-off system
4. Alternative voting system
5. Proportional representation system
6. Ballot or voting system
7. Direct and Indirect electoral systems
ABSOLUTE MAJORITY SYSTEM
Absolute majority system is an electoral system where the candidate with more half votes (that’s 50% plus 1) in an election is declared winner. If none of the candidates scored 50% plus 1, simple majority electoral system is adopted. That’s, candidate with the highest votes is declared winner. Absolute majority is another form of geographical representation.
ADVANTAGES OF ABSOLUTE MAJORITY SYSTEM
1. It is democratic in nature.
2. It represents the wish of the majority.
3. It gives room for popular mandate m
4. The candidate with 50% votes (50% plus 1 or majority votes) is declared winner.
5. The electoral system produces candidate with the qualities.
DISADVANTAGES OF ABSOLUTE MAJORITY SYSTEM
1. It delays declaration of election result if no candidates scored 50% or 50% plus 1.
2. Absolutely majority is often difficult to obtain.
3. It is very expensive and time consuming.
4. It is likely influent or manipulate by powerful politicians in the case of second ballot.
5. It gives room for vote buying and selling.
