CONTENT OF THE LESSON

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION 

Agriculture in Nigeria is the practice of cultivating the land and keeping or breeding animals for food and commercial purposes.

These practices are further divided sub – activities known as the branches of agriculture. There are five main branches of agriculture, namely; 

1. Livestock production

2. Crop production

3. Agricultural economics

4. Agricultural engineering.

5. Agricultural Education

 

 

LIVESTOCK

Livestock is commonly defined as domesticated animals raised in an agricultural setting to produce commodities such as meats, eggs, fish, milk, fur, leather and wool.

 

CROP PRODUCTION

Crop production is a branch of agriculture that deals with growing crops for use as food and fiber.

Crop production includes grains, cotton, tobacco, fruits, vegetables, nuts and plants.

Different crops grow best in different areas of the country.

Farmers usually work from sunrise to sunset during planting and harvesting seasons.

 

AGRICULTURAL ENGINEERING 

Agricultural Engineering is the area of engineering concerned with the design, construction and improvement of farming equipment and machinery.

Agricultural engineers integrate technology with farming. For example, they design new and improved farming equipment that may work more efficiently, or perform new tasks.

 

AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS 

Agricultural Economics is the study of the allocation, distribution, and utilization of the resources used, along with the commodities produced, by farming.

Agricultural economics plays a role in the economics of development, for a continuous level of farm surplus is one of the wellsprings of technological and commercial growth.

 

AGRICULTURAL EDUCATION 

Agricultural education teaches students about agriculture, food and natural resources.

Agricultural educators teach students a wide variety of skills, including science, math, leadership, communications, management technology.

 

 

LESSON 2 – PEOPLE INVOLVED IN AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION

There are many people who engage in different activities that lead to growing of crops, rearing of animals, processing and selling of agricultural products.

The people who involved agricultural production are,

1. Agriculture teachers

2. Crop farmers

3. Gardeners or horticulture

4. Animal husbandry or livestock farmers

5. Fishermen

6. Veterinary doctors

7. Agriculture engineers

8. Agricultural economics

9. Soil scientists

10. Market people

 

AGRICULTURAL TEACHERS

Agric teachers are people who responsible for teaching students about agriculture, food and natural resources.

 

CROP FARMERS

Crop farmers are the people who grow different types of crop.

 

 

VETERINARY DOCTORS

Veterinary doctors are people who treat any kinds animals sickness and diseases.

 

GARDENERS

Gardeners are the people who plants flowers.

 

HORTICULTURIST

Horticulturists are the people who growing plants for food and medical purposes.

 

SOIL SCIENTISTS 

Soil scientists are the people who test the quality of soil.

 

FISHERIES

Fisheries are the people who harvest fish on larger quantities from the ocean for commercial purposes.

 

MARKET PEOPLE 

Market people are the people who buy agricultural produces from the farm and sell directly at the market.

 

AGRICULTURE ENGINEERS 

Agriculture engineers are the people who repairs and maintain agricultural tools and equipments.

 

REVISION AND WEEKLY ASSESSMENT (TEST) 

 

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson based on what he/she taught or what the pupils have learned.

2. Teacher organizes pupils in groups or pairs depending on the size of the class and available instructional materials.

3. Teacher displays chart showing different branches of agriculture with appropriate examples.

4. Teacher lets the pupils as a group identify and discuss each activities of agriculture on the chart.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils identify and discuss each activities of agriculture on the chart.

5. Teacher uses the chart and the pupil’s relevant responses to introduce the lesson and leads a class discussion on branches of agriculture.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils pay attention to the introduction and participate actively in the class discussion on branches of agriculture.

5. Teacher uses chart showing people who involved agricultural production to lead a class discussion on each person.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils participate actively in the class discussion on people who involved agricultural production.

6. Teacher summarizes the lesson on the board using appropriate lesson evaluation.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils participate actively in the summary by responding correctly to the questions and write as instructed.

 

 

CONCLUSION

To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
