PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES 

By the end of the lesson, the pupils should be able to –

1. identify the different types of ceremonies.

2. give example of each type of ceremonies.

3. mention important values derived from some of the ceremonies.

4. identify materials associated with ceremonies.

ENTRY BEHAVIOUR

The pupils can identify and describe different types of ceremonies such as naming, wedding, carnival, etc.

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of Pictures of Ceremonial events, Ceremonial food types, Clothing and costumes, Picture of animals, books, video films, etc.

METHOD OF TEACHING 

Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION

A ceremony is the gathering of people to celebrate an event. For example – birthday, naming, marriage, etc. During this period, there are a lot of food and drinks to eat and drink, listen and dance to music during a ceremony.

TYPES OF CEREMONIES

1. Traditional ceremonies

2. Religious ceremonies

3. Carnivals ceremonies

4. National ceremonies

EXAMPLES OF CEREMONIES 

The following are examples of ceremonies –

1. Traditional – Naming, Marriage, Fishing, Durbar, Masquerade, etc.

2. Religious – Christmas, Salah, etc.

3. National – National Arts and Culture Festival

4. Carnivals – Lagos, Abuja, Calabar, etc.

LESSON 2 – IMPORTANT VALUES DERIVED FROM CEREMONIES 

The important values of ceremonies are as follows:

1. Ceremonies bring people together.

2. Ceremonies promote the people’s culture.

3. Ceremonies strengthen relationships.

4. Ceremonies educate and enlighten the youth about their culture.

5. Ceremonies encourage love and sharing among one another.

MATERIALS ASSOCIATED WITH CEREMONIES

1. Animals – Chickens, Rams, Goats, Cows, etc.

2. Food – Rice, Yam, Semo, etc.

3. Clothing – Lace, Ankara, etc.

LESSON 3 – REVISION AND WEEKLY ASSESSMENT (TEST)

As stated in the performance objectives or lesson evaluation. 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Teacher organizes the pupils in groups depending on the size of the class.

3. Teacher displays chart showing different types of ceremonies in Nigeria.

4. Teacher allows the pupils to examine the chart, identify and describe different types of ceremonies.

5. Teacher uses the chart and the pupils relevant responses to introduction to the lesson and leads a class discussion on the meaning and types of ceremonies given appropriate examples.

6. Teacher guides to identify and discuss the important values of ceremonies.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils state and discuss the benefits derived from ceremonies.

7. Teacher guides the pupils to mention things associated with ceremonies.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils mention materials associated with specific ceremonies.

8. Teacher summarizes the lesson on the board using appropriate lesson evaluation.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils participate actively in the summary of the lesson by responding to the questions correctly and write as instructed.

CONCLUSION

To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
