TOPIC – DANCE

LEARNING AREA

1. Meaning of Dance

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, the pupils should be able to –

1. state some activities that includes dance in the school.

2. demonstrate dance with the correct steps and body movements.

 

ENTRY BEHAVIOUR

The pupils can demonstrate few moves (steps) in dancing.

 

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of

1. Musical instuments e.g. Drums, Gong, Pattlers or Shakers, Wooden drums, Clappers, Xylophones, etc;

2. Pictures of dancers performing;

3. DVDs or VCDs Recording of dances.

 

METHOD OF TEACHING

Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON  

LESSON 1 – TYPES OF DANCE

INTRODUCTION

Play a suitable Nigerian music that will make the pupils to dance or show body movement.

 

MEANING OF DANCE 

Dance is the movement of the body. We dance to the rhythm of the song or the beat of the instruments.

 

TYPES OF DANCE

1. Foreign dance

2. Traditional (Local) dance

 

FOREIGN DANCE

Foreign dance is non Nigerian dances that are from other countries and mostly played for social dances by the younger generation.

 

LOCAL DANCE

Traditional dances are Nigerian dances that represent our culture and traditions. They are mostly played by the older ones.

 

LESSON 2 – ACTIVITIES THAT INCLUDES DANCE IN THE SCHOOL

Dance is a great way to work on balance, footwork, spatial awareness and so much more. There are activities in the that includes dances –

1. Assembly period/time

2. Teaching and learning activities

3. Break time and activities

4. Interhouse sport

5. Games

6. Sound of victory

7. Motivation

8. When the pupil(s)/group perform a task successfully

9. Physical and Health Education class

10. Good news

 

DANCING ACTIVITIES

Play DVD player showing both foreign and traditional dance.

Teacher’s/Pupil’s Activities – Perform basic dancing moves with the pupils.

 

LESSON EVALUATION AND WEEKLY ACTIVITIES

As stated in the performance objectives or lesson evaluation.

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Teacher organizes the pupils into groups depending on the size of the class. 

3. Teacher plays mp3 or CD player to watch the pupils actions and reactions to the movement.

4. Teacher joins the pupils to ‘shake body’ and asks the pupils, what are we I doing?

5. Teacher uses the actions and reactions of the pupils to introduce the lesson and leads a discussion on the meaning and types of music.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils pay attention to the lesson introduction and participate actively in the class discussion on the meaning and types of music.

6. Teachers creates activities that will enable pupils to identify types of dance.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils identify and differentiate between types of dance.

7. Teacher plays DVD player that demonstrates a specified local dance using the basic movements.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils watch and practices a specified dance guided by the teacher. Imitate the dance movement as observed in the video.

8. Teacher summarizes the lessons on the board using appropriate lesson evaluation.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils pay attention to the summary of the lesson by responding correctly to most of the questions and write as instructed.

 

CONCLUSION

To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
