PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES
By the end of the lesson, most pupils should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and should be able to –
1. state the meaning of unbalanced diet.
2. state the effects of not eating a balanced diet.

The pupils can define balanced diet.
INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS
The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of pictorial display of children suffering from kwashiorkor, goiter, knock/bow legs.

Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.
Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON
INTRODUCTORY ACTIVITIES
Teacher’s Activities – Display pictorial display of children with good health and children suffering from kwashiorkor, goiter, knock/bow legs for the pupils to examine and discuss nature of the two children.
Pupil’s Activities – Response to the teacher’s instructions.
Teacher’s remark – Balanced diet is very important for good health. One of the children is taken balanced diet and the other one is suffering from lack of balanced diet. Give a great cheer for active participation and discuss the meaning of unbalanced diet.

MEANING OF UNBALANCED DIET
Unbalanced diets are the lack of adequate amounts of the nutrients in foods which are necessary for good health.
RECORDS OF BALANCED DIET AND UNBALANCED DIET
Teacher’s/Pupil’s Activities – Forms the list, state what makes up a balanced diet or unbalanced diet.
LESSON 2 – INTRODUCTORY ACTIVITIES
Teacher’s/Pupil’s Activities – Based on the chart used in Lesson 1, guide the pupils to discuss effects of unbalanced diet.
EFFECTS OF UNBALANCED DIET
The effects of unbalanced diet are –
1. Stunted growth
2. Kwashiorkor or protein malnutrition
3. Goitre – Swelling neck
4. Rickets (bow leg) – soft and weak bones due to lack of vitamin D.
PRESENTATION
To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:
1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;
2. Forms the list, state what makes up a balanced diet or unbalanced diet.
Pupil’s Activities – Keep a record of all the food you eat in a day.
3. Discusses the effect of balanced and unbalanced diet.
Pupil’s Activities – Identify effects of not eating a balanced diet. Ask your teacher whether or not your diet is balanced or not.
4. Summarizes the lesson on the board.
Pupil’s Activities – Copy as the teacher writes.
CONCLUSION
To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
