PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES 

By the end of the lesson, the pupils should have attained the following objectives –

1. explain the meaning of loamy soil.

2. observe and describe the physical properties of loamy soil.

3. identify the organisms in loamy soil.

The pupils can identify and state some of the uses of soil.

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:

1. Samples of garden soil (clay, loamy and sandy soils)

2. Hand lens

3. Sieve

5. Containers

CONTENT OF THE LESSON  

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION 

Soil is the top layer of the earth.

There are different types of soil – sandy, clay and loamy soil.

 

 

MEANING OF LOAMY SOIL

Loamy soil contains the mixture sand, clay, and various organic materials.

It is known as agricultural soil because it is the best soil for growing crops.

 

 

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF LOAMY SOIL

1. It is a black soil.

2. It has moderate particles.

3. It is soft in texture.

3. It is suitable for agriculture.

 

 

LESSON 2 – ORGANISMS IN THE SAMPLE OF LOAMY SOIL 

1. Earthworms

2. Ants

3. Micrograms

 

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Gets the sample of different types of soil.

3. Lets the pupils examine and describe the colour, texture and size of particles.

Pupil’s Activities – Examine and describe the colour, texture and size of particles.

4. Displays chart showing a farmland or takes pupils to the school’s farm if available.

5. Lets pupils describe the contents of the chart.

Pupil’s Activities – Discuss the importance of soil for growing crops.

6. Uses the chart and soil sample to introduce the lesson and leads a discussion on the meaning and physical properties of loamy soil.

Pupil’s Activities – Pay attention to the lesson introduction, Identify and describe loamy soil and its physical properties.

7. Guides pupils to identify some of the organisms present in the soil. In this section, proceed with caution because some of them can be harmful. 

Pupil’s Activities – Make list of common organisms in the soil sample.

8. Summarizes the lesson on the board.

Pupil’s Activities – Participate actively in the lesson summary and write as instructed.
