LESSON NOTES ON HIV/AIDS

MEANING OF HIV/AIDS 

HIV/AIDS is an infectious disease that can be transmitted through contact with infected blood, sex and sharing of sharp objects.

HIV stands Human Immunodeficiency Virus

AID stands Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome

HIV causes AIDS and weakens the body’s ability to fight other infections.

 

CAUSES OF HIV/AIDS 

HIV is caused by a virus.

It can spread through,

1. Sexual contact

2. Illicit injection drug use

3. Sharing needles

4. Contact with infected blood, or from mother to child during pregnancy, childbirth or breastfeeding.

 

SYMPTOMS/EFFECTS OF HIV/AIDS 

The symptoms of HIV/AIDS are as follows:

1. Swollen lymph nodes

2. Weight loss

3. Fever

4. Diarrhoea and cough

5. Headache

6. Muscle aches and joint pain

7. Rash

8. Sore throat and painful mouth sores

9. Swollen lymph glands, mainly on the neck

10. Weight loss

11. Night sweats

12. Dizziness

 

PREVENTIVE MEASURES OF HIV/AIDS

1. Know your HIV/AIDS status

2. Use of condom

3. Abstinence

4. Faithfulness to partners, etc.

5. Stigmatization of PLWHA.
