MEANING OF CITIZENSHIP
Citizenship is the right of being a citizen of a country. A Nigerian citizen is a person whose parents come from Nigeria or obtained Nigerian citizenship by registration or naturalization.
Membership of a nation based on laid down conditions.
TYPES OF CITIZENSHIP
1. Citizenship by Birth
This is known as country’s birth. A person automatically becomes a citizen of his/her birth.
2. Citizenship by Registration
This requires a person to become a citizen in the country he/she married because a marriage requires a registration.
3. Citizenship by Naturalization
This occurs when a person stays in a particular country for a very time usually 10 years.
This is automatically by a statute. it may involve an application or a motion and approval by legal authorities.
ACQUISITION OF CITIZENSHIP
A citizen is a legal membership of a particular country with full right to claim a state as his/her own.
The following are the process of becoming a citizen of a country –
1. Marriage
2. Good character
3. Statutory age
4. One’s contribution to the country
5. Readiness to stay in the country
6. Residency
RIGHTS OF CITIZENSHIP
1. The right to life and education.
2. The right to personal freedom.
3. The right to fair hearing in court.
4. The right to private family life.
5. The right to adopt a religion, etc.
DUTIES AND OBLIGATIONS OF CITIZENSHIP
1. Payment of tax
2. Proper use of amenities
3. Orderliness
4. Voting
5. Respect for symbols, etc.
DIFFERENCES BETWEEN CITIZENS AND NON-CITIZENS
Citizens are people who are members of a particular country such as Nigeria. While citizens are people who are not members of a particular country.
