By the end of the lesson, most pupils should have attained the following objectives –

1. identify the animals living in the soil.

2. discuss the uses of soil to animals.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION 

Soil is the top layer of the earth. That is, the group or land.

There are different types of soil – sandy soil, clay soil and loamy soil. Each of the soil are used for different purposes such as sandy soil for building, clay soil for moulding and loamy for planting of crops.

 

 

ANIMALS AND WHERE THEY LIVE 

Animals are living organisms that feeds on organic matter. Living organism is anything that has life. For example – goat, cow, rat, insect, etc. Some of the living organisms lived on land, inside the soil, water or on the trees. 

Animals that lived inside the soil are known as soil animals. For example – earthworms, ants, termites, moles, etc. 

 

IMPORTANCE OF ANIMALS

1. Animals are provide food like meat, milk, eggs, cheese and butter.

2. Animals are used as pets or companion. The most common pets are cats, dogs, rabbits, pigs and fishes. 

3. Animals are used for security support. They provide security at home, private and public places. 

4. Animals help people do their work. They help people prepare the land for planting. 

5. Animals are means of transportation. Horses, cows and camels can carry heavy things and people to other places.

6. Animals are source of clothing and other materials. 

9. Animals provide employment opportunities. 

10. Animals are source of income. 

 

 

LESSON 2 – IMPORTANCE OF SOIL TO ANIMALS 

1. Soil provides water, air, food, and habitat to the animals. 

2. Soil provides housing for animals such as earthworms, ants, termites, rodents, moles, shrews, mice, gophers, etc. 

3. Soil provides materials for making nest. 

4. Soil provides support and protection for animal to lay and hatch their eggs. 

5. Soil provides security and safety for all kinds of animals. 

6. Soil provides the necessary support for all kinds of animals. 

 

 

LESSON 3 – REVISION AND WEEKLY ASSESSMENT 

As stated in performance objectives or lesson evaluation. 

 

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Teacher organizes the pupils in groups or pair depending on the size of the class.

3. Teacher displays chart showing all kinds types of animals. 

4. Teacher asks pupils as groups to group or classify animals according to where they lived. 

5. Teacher uses the chart and pupil’s relevant responding to introduce the lesson – importance of soil to animals. 

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils pay attention to the lesson introduction to understand the concept of the lesson. 

6. Teacher leads a class discussion on the meaning and importance of animals. 

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils participate actively in the class discussion. 

7. Teacher takes the pupils to open field to guide the pupils to discuss how the soil is important for animals. 

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils state and discuss the importance of soil to animals. 

8. Teacher summarizes the lesson on the board with appropriate evaluation.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils participate actively in the summary of the lesson by responding correctly to most of the questions and write as instructed.

 

 

CONCLUSION

To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
