CONTENTS OF THE LESSON

FOCUS LESSONS 

INTRODUCTION TO TRADITIONAL DANCE

Dance is the movement of the body match with the rhythm of the music. Traditional dance is a local dance with local music or musical instruments and beliefs.

It mostly involves waist twisting, clapping, bending the back and the knees, shaking the head along with the hands and legs.

 

DANCES FROM THE REGIONS OF THE COUNTRY 

1. Bata dance, Western Nigeria mainly among the Yoruba people.

2. Sharo Dance, Northern Nigeria mainly among the Fulani and Hausa people.

3. Koroso dance, Northern Nigeria mainly among the Fulani and Hausa people in Kano.

4. Atilogwu dance, Eastern Nigeria mainly among the Igbo people.

5. Nkwa Umu Agbogho dance, Eastern Nigeria mainly among the Igbo people in Ebonyi.

6. Ikpirikpi Ogu dance, Eastern Nigeria mainly among the Igbo people.

7. Gese dance, Western Nigeria mainly among the Yoruba people.

8. Swange dance, North Central mainly among the Tiv people.

9. Ogene dance, Eastern Nigeria mainly among the Enugu and Anambra people.

10. Ekombi dance, Southern Nigeria mainly among the Calabar people.

11. Ukwata dance, Southern Nigeria mainly among the Delta people.

12. Mmanwu dance, Southern Nigeria mainly among the Igbo people.

 

 

COSTUMES FOR THE VARIOUS TRADITIONAL DANCES 

1. Bata Dance 

Clothing – Dansiki and trouser for men with cap and wrapper for the women with gele and beads round their neck, hands and legs.

 

2. Sharo Dance

The men dancers wear an armless top designed with mofila wool, with a cap on their head and cowries on neck and hands. The dancers hold a long strong stick.

The women dancers wear an armless short top design with wool that covers their breast but opens their navel and with a long wrapper. They also carry a decorated calabash containing cow milk called “Fura”.

 

3. Koroso dance

The dancers wear multi-coloured costumes such as clothes, beads, bracelets, and anklets made of rattling beads called ‘Koroso’, after which the dance is named.

 

4. Atilogwu dance

The dancers wear bright multi-coloured costumes with cap.

 

5. Nkwa Umu Agbogho dance

TYPES OF TRADITIONAL DANCES AND DANCE STEPS 

Dancing steps are common around the world as well in Nigeria. Here are common dancing steps in Nigeria,
