1. explain the meaning of family.

2. discuss types of family.

3. state the features of nuclear and extended family.

4. differentiate between nuclear and extended family.

 

 

ENTRY BEHAVIOR

The pupils have a family and can identify one or more families next to them.

 

 

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:

1. A chart showing the nuclear families.

2. Photographs of family members.

3. Picture of an extended family which showing its membership.

4. Drawings/ pictures showing members of the family carrying out some duties.

 

 

METHOD OF TEACHING

Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION

Family is made of people who are related to one another by blood.

 

 

TYPES OF FAMILY 

There are two (2) of family,

1. NUCLEAR FAMILY 

Nuclear family is the smallest unit of family that consists of the father, mother and their children.

 

2. EXTENDED FAMILY

Extended family is the family beyond nuclear family.

It consists of the father, mother and their children with grandparents, uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces, in laws and others.

 

Note – For children at this level, nuclear and extended families are basic family types. 

 

 

LESSON 2 – FEATURES OF NUCLEAR AND EXTENDED FAMILY

FEATURES OF A NUCLEAR FAMILY

1. Nuclear family is the smallest types of family.

2. It is the modern types of family.

3. It consists father, mother and their biological or adopted children.

4. Nuclear family may or may not legally married.

5. It is easy to manage.

 

 

FEATURES OF THE EXTENDED FAMILY

1. The size of extended family is larger than nuclear family.

2. It is an extension of nuclear family.

3. It is very expensive to manage.

4. It is the oldest types of family.

5. There is strength in size and number.

 

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Displays chart showing a nuclear family.

3. Lets the pupils examine and describe the content of the chart.

Pupil’s Activities – Describe the content of chart.

4. Uses the chart and the keywords (family or father, mother and children) to introduce the lesson and lead a discussion on the meaning of family.

Pupil’s Activities – Pay attention to the lesson introduction and explain the meaning of family.

5. Adds chart showing extended family and ask the pupils to examine and differentiate between the two charts.

Pupil’s Activities – Identify the difference between the charts.

6. Uses the pupil’s responses to lead a discussion on the types of family and their features.

Pupil’s Activities – Differentiate between the types of family.

7. Guides pupils in groups to demonstrate nuclear and extended family.

Pupil’s Activities – Participate actively in the group activities.

6. Summary the points on the board.

Pupil’s Activities – Write as instructed.

 

 

CONCLUSION

To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
