PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES
By the end of the lesson, most of the pupils should have attained the following objectives –
1. name members of a nuclear family.
2. identify and name members of the extended family.
3. describe the various kinds of relationship among family members as aunt, uncle, nephew ,niece, cousin and ward.
4. draw the family tree (extended family).
5. state the importance of good relationship between family members.
ENTRY BEHAVIOR
The pupils have a family and can identify one or more families next to them.
INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS
The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:
1. A chart showing the nuclear families.
2. Photographs of family members.
3. Picture of an extended family which showing its membership.
4. Drawings/ pictures showing members of the family carrying out some duties.
METHOD OF TEACHING
Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.
Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON
LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION
Family is made of people who are related to one another by blood.
TYPES OF FAMILY
There are two (2) of Family, nuclear and extended family.
1. NUCLEAR FAMILY – A nuclear family is the smallest unit of family that consists of the father, mother and their children.
2. EXTENDED FAMILY – An extended family is the family beyond nuclear family. It consists of the father, mother and their children with grandparents, uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces, in laws and others.
Note – For children at this level, nuclear and extended families are basic family types.
ASSIGNMENT – Using the format on the board, draw your family tree.
LESSON 2 – MEMBERS OF NUCLEAR AND EXTENDED FAMILY
A nuclear family consist of the –
1. Father
2. Mother
3. Children
While an extended family is the family that consists father, mother and their children with –
1. Grandfathers
2. Grandmothers
3. Uncles
4. Aunts
5. Cousins
6. Nephews
7. Nieces
8. In laws, and other.
FAMILY TREE
IMPORTANCE OF THE FAMILY
1. They love one another.
2. They have great concern and interest for one another.
3. They have sense of belonging.
4. They give assistance to one another.
5. They protect and defend one another.
6. They protect the family’s name.
7. They pass down the good family’s traditions from one generation to another.
PRESENTATION
To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:
1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;
2. Teacher organizes the pupils in group depending on the size of class.
3. Teacher displays chart showing a simple family made up of father, mother and their children. If possible, a chart or picture of a familiar family in the society.
4. Teacher lets the pupils as group to identify and discuss the importance of family picture.
Pupil’s Activities – As group, the pupils identify each member of the family and state the importance of family picture.
5. Teacher uses the chart and the pupils relevant responses to introduce the lesson and leads a class discussion on the meaning and types of family.
Pupil’s Activities – The pupils pay attention to the lesson introduction and participate actively in the class discussion on the meaning and types of family.
6. Teacher asks the pupils to state the importance of family.
Pupil’s Activities – The pupils state the importance of family.
7. Teacher summarizes the lesson on the board using appropriate lesson evaluation.
Pupil’s Activities – The pupils participate actively in the summary of the lesson by respond correctly to most of the questions asked and write as instructed.
CONCLUSION
To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
