CONTENT OF THE LESSON

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION TO HOME ECONOMICS 

Home Economics is the study and application of various skills that are necessary for managing a home and living a healthy and productive life. It encompasses a range of subjects including nutrition, cooking, finance, fashion, interior design, parenting, and household management.

 

IMPORTANCE OF HOME ECONOMICS 

The importance of Home Economics lies in its ability to teach individuals essential life skills that are fundamental to their well-being and success.

1. It teaches how to cook and prepare meals from scratch.

2. It teaches basic knowledge on healthy eating habits, meal planning, and food preparation.

3. It teaches the basic of budgeting saving and responsible spending.

4. It enhances long-term financial stability and ensuring a good quality of life.

5. It prepares people for cooking adventures.

6. It strengthens family bonding and fosters a sense of independence and self-reliance.

7. It teaches skills such as cleaning, organizing, and maintaining a home.

8. It teaches basic sewing skills, clothing care, and wardrobe management.

9. It provides basic knowledge and skills related to parenting, child development, and early childhood education.

10. It teaches principles of interior design, allowing individuals to create aesthetically pleasing and functional living spaces.

LESSON 2 – CAREER OPPORTUNITIES IN HOME ECONOMICS 

There are a variety of career opportunities available in the field of Home Economics. Most of these careers are available in the universities and other institutions of learning as well as internship training or apprenticeship. Some potential career paths are as follows:

1. Nutritionist/Dietitian

2. Culinary Arts

3. Home Management

4. Interior Designer

5. Fashion Designer/Stylist

6. Family and Consumer Sciences Education

7. Social Services

8. Event Planning

9. Home-Based Business

 

NUTRITIONIST AND DIETITIAN 

A nutritionist is a person who advises others on what to eat in order to lead a healthy lifestyle or achieve a specific health-related goal, such as losing weight or reducing blood pressure. While a dietitian is an expert in identifying and treating disease-related malnutrition and in conducting medical nutrition therapy, for example designing an enteral tube feeding regimen or mitigating the effects of cancer cachexia.

 

CULINARY ARTS 

Culinary arts are graduates who can work as chefs, food service managers, or culinary educators. They can find employment in restaurants, hotels, catering companies, and culinary schools.

 

HOME MANAGEMENT 

Home management or mangers are graduates who work as household managers or personal assistants for busy individuals or families. They may be responsible for managing finances, organizing schedules, coordinating household staff, and ensuring the smooth running of a home.

 

4. INTERIOR DESIGNER 

Interior designers are people who work as professional interior designers. They can create aesthetically pleasing and functional spaces for residential, commercial, or hospitality projects.

 

5. FASHION DESIGNER AND STYLIST 

Fashion designers and stylists are graduates who focus on fashion can pursue careers as fashion designers, stylists, or personal shoppers. They can work in the fashion industry, retail, or as freelancers.

 

6. FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCES EDUCATION 

Family and consumer science education are graduates who educate students on various aspects of home economics, including cooking, nutrition, finance, and parenting.

 

7. SOCIAL SERVICES 

Social services are graduates who work in social service agencies, providing support and education to individuals and families. They may focus on areas such as parenting education, financial literacy, or nutrition programs.

 

8. EVENT PLANNING 

Event planners are graduates who pursue careers in event planning and coordination. They can work for event management companies, hotels, or start their own event planning businesses.

 

9. HOME-BASED BUSINESS 

Home based business are graduates who may choose to start their own home-based businesses. This could include catering services, baking and cake decorating, event decoration, or offering home organizing and decluttering services.

 

REVISION AND WEEKLY ASSESSMENT (TEST) 

 

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson based on what he/she taught or what the pupils have learned.

2. Teacher organizes pupils in groups or pairs depending on the size of the class and available instructional materials.

3. Teacher displays chart showing different careers in home economics for the to identify and discuss their roles in their home and community.

4. Teacher listens and participates in the group discussion to related the lesson and broaden the pupils and their group understanding.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils identify and discuss the roles of each career in home economics.

5. Teacher uses the chart and the pupil’s relevant responses to introduce the lesson and leads a class discussion on the importance of home economics.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils pay attention to the introduction and participate actively in the class discussion and appreciate the importance of home economics in their home and the many societies.

5. Teacher uses the chart to guide and leads a class discussion on the different career opportunities in home economics.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils participate actively in the class discussion and identify their area of possible interest in home economics.

6. Teacher summarizes the lesson on the board using appropriate lesson evaluation.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils participate actively in the summary by responding correctly to the questions and write as instructed.

 

 

CONCLUSION

To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
