TOPIC: RESPONSIBLE PARENTHOOD

 

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, the pupils should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and be able to –

  1. list various characteristics of responsible parenthood;
  2. mention some of the problems of irresponsible parenthood;
  3. identify values that can be developed to avoid irresponsible parenthood.

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:

  1. Relevant cases
  2. Resource persons
  3. Filers, and posters of AIDS patients,
  4. Posters of localized areas of STDs/STIs.

 

METHOD OF TEACHING – Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

 

INTRODUCTION

A responsible parenthood is the ability of a parent to able meet and care for the needs of their children.

It is duties and responsibilities of parents to teach and educate, protect, detect and provide for the basic needs of their children.

 

CONCEPT OF A PARENT

A parent is a father or mother.

 

DUTIES/CHARACTERISTICS Of RESPONSIBLE PARENTHOOD

  1. Ensuring readiness for new baby.
  2. Attending antenatal regularly.
  3. Eating nourishing food
  4. Caring for the child.
  5. Providing family needs.
  6. Breastfeeding
  7. Ensuring immunization, that is using exclusive breastfeeding.
  8. Providing children with proper parental guidance, etc.

 

 

PROBLEMS OF IRRESPONSIBLE PARENTHOOD

There are several actions and incidences that could make you a parent irresponsible. Some of these are –

  1. Disorganized home.
  2. Little or no parenting skills.
  3. Scolding the child excessively.
  4. Comparing your child/ren with another.
  5. Inadequate support.
  6. Setting a bad example.
  7. Over protective.
  8. Over pampering.
  9. Little or no time for the child/ren.

 

VALUES THAT FOSTER RESPONSIBLE PARENTHOOD/DEVELOP TO AVOID IRRESPONSIBLE PARENTHOOD

  3. Care
  4. Concern for others
  5. Honesty
  6. Tolerance
  7. Cooperation, etc.

 

 

PRESENTATION

  • To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:
  1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;
  2. Uses cases studies to explain the characteristics of responsible parenthood and the problems of irresponsible parenthood;
  3. Pupil’s Activities – React to case studies.
  4. Invites qualified health officer and social welfare officer as a resource persons to talk on the problems irresponsible parenthood and the kind of values that can be developed to avoid it;
  5. Pupil’s Activities – Ask questions based on the resource persons presentations.
  6. Asks pupils to summarize their discussion with resource person;
    Pupil’s Activities – Summarize the talks given by the resource persons.

 

 

CONCLUSION

  • To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
