TOPIC – CLASSIFICATION OF PLANTS 

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

1. Spirogyra, liver-warts, mosses, maize, orange and hibicus.

2. Maize, rice, groundnuts, beans, yam, cassava, tomato, okra, banana, pawpaw, coffee, ginger, pepper, coconut, palm fruit.

3. Rice, beans, maize, cabbage, radish, ginger, mango, coconut.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

1. classify plants using

a) botanical and

(b) agricultural techniques of classification

2. classify plants based on life cycles

CONTENTS OF THE LESSON

FOCUS LESSONS 

1. Botanical classification:

• Thallophytes (Algae)

• Spermatophytes (the seed bearing plant)

2. Agricultural classification:

• cereals – maize, rice, etc.

• legumes – cowpea, groundnuts, etc.

• root crops – cassava, yam, etc.

• vegetables- tomato, okra, onion, etc.

• fruit – banana, pawpaw, etc.

• beverages and drugs – coffee, tobacco, etc.

• spices – ginger, pepper, etc.

• oil – coconut, palm fruit, etc.

• latex – natural rubber, etc.

• fibres – jute, cotton, etc.

3. Plants classified on the span of their life cycles:

• annuals

• biennials

• perennials

LESSON PRESENTATION

TEACHER’S ACTIVITIES

The teacher,

1. Revises classification in SS 1 using specimens like spirogyra, mosses, water ferns, maize, orange and hibiscus.

2. Leads students to classify the specimens using agricultural classification.

3. Asks students to select from the specimens and name the classes they belong to based on life cycles.

 STUDENT’S ACTIVITIES

The students,

1. Classify the specimens according to botanical classification.

2. Classify the crops using agricultural classification.

3. Classify the crops into annuals, biennials and perennials.

LESSON EVALUATION

Students to,

1. record in their notebooks the phyla of the specimens presented.

2. mention two examples of plants (crops) in each classification or category.

3. write the two examples each of annuals, bi-annual and perennials.
