By the end of the lesson, most pupils should have attained the following objectives –

1. explain the meaning of desktop publishing.

2. identify some of the desktop publishing applications or softwares.

3. publish a printed document using any of the following – ms word, excel and powerpoint.

 

 

ENTRY BEHAVIOUR

The pupils can identify some of the desktop publishing applications.

 

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of newspapers, magazines, functional computer with ms word, excel and powerpoint software.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON  

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION 

Desktop publishing is the production of printed materials such as newspaper, magazines, leaflets, brochures, etc. using page layout software on a personal computer.

 

DESKTOP PUBLISHING SOFTWARE 

Desktop publishing software including,

 

1. Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook

2. Microsoft publisher

3. Adobe InDesign

4. Pagination.com

5. QuarkXpress

6. Scribus

7. LaTex

8. Libre Office Writer

9. Libre Office Draw

10. Canva

 

 

LESSON 2 – USES OF DESKTOP PUBLISHING 

Desktop publishing is used for the production of,

1. Business card

2. Newspapers, newsletters and magazines

3. Brochures, posters, flyer, leaflets and catalogues

4. Books, textbooks and e-books

5. PDF

6. Banners

7. web pages

8. Resume

 

DESKTOP PUBLISHING TRAINING SESSION 

Teacher organizes pupils in groups or pairs depending on the size of the class to training them on how create simple magazine, flyer or business card using Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook

 

Note – You can invite a qualified desktop publisher.

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Teacher organizes the pupils in groups or pair depending on the size of the class.

 

3. Teacher displays samples of newspaper, flyers and business card.

4. Teacher lets the groups or pairs to identify and the importance of each sample.

Pupil’s Activities – Identify and state the importance of newspaper, flyer and business card.

6. Teacher uses the samples to introduce the lesson, desktop publishing.

Pupil’s Activities – Pay attention to the lesson introduction to understand the concept of the lesson.

7. Teacher explains the meaning and uses of desktop publishing.

Pupil’s Activities – Explain the meaning of desktop publishing and analyze the uses in their communities m

8. Teacher states some of the desktop publishing software.

9. Teacher organizes desktop publishing training sessions using Microsoft word, excel and PowerPoint.

Pupil’s Activities – Participate activity in the desktop training sessions.

10. Teacher summarizes the lesson on the board with appropriate evaluation.

Pupil’s Activities – Participate actively in the summary of the lesson and write as instructed.
