TOPIC: Stress Shift Practice
PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES
By the end of the lesson, the pupils should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and should be able to:
- Say words of one, two, three, or more syllables with the correct stress.
- Indicate syllable stress on words of one, two, three or four syllables.
- Use the words in sentences with correct emphasis or stress in the right place.
INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS
The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:

METHOD OF TEACHING – Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.
Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON
PRONUNCIATION PRACTICE
- History – Historical
- Science – Scientific
- Electric – Electrical
In two syllable words, the stress could be on the first or second. When the stress is on one, the other syllable is not stressed. In the following words the first syllable is stressed – history, science, nonsense, etc.
When the word becomes longer, the stress often shift to the second or third syllable: history – his – toric, science – sci – entific, nonsense – non – sensical,etc.
PRESENTATION
- To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:
- To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;
- Supplies words of more one syllable and lets the pupils find their adjectives equivalent – history/historical.
- Pupil’s Activities – Say the words following the teacher’s lead.
- Pronounces the words and the adjectives equivalents with the correct stresses.
- Pupil’s Activities – Practice saying words of two syllables and those of more syllables built on them, with the correct stresses.
- Makes sentences with them, putting the stresses in the correct place.
- Pupil’s Activities – Read sentences containing examples of such words – our history teacher is in school, he wants us to have a his – torical society. Science has helped our lives greatly as a result of the several sci – entific discoveries made.
- Leads them to pronounce such words using the correct stresses.
Note – the practice should be a continuous one as the correct pronunciation of words is best taught functionally, when pupils encounter the words in reading or oral context. The pronunciation exercise can be however be done rapidly without any explanation.
CONCLUSION
- To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
LESSON EVALUATION
Pupils to say words of one or more syllabus with the correct stresses.
