PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES 

By the end of the lesson, the students should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and should be able to –

1. explain the meaning of citizenship.

2. name different types of citizenship.

3. describe the processes of becoming citizen of a country.

ENTRY BEHAVIOUR

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:

1. The Nigerian Constitution.

2. Specimen copy of citizenship registration forms.

3. Sample National I.D. cards

4. Sample birth certificate.

METHOD OF TEACHING – Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON  

MEANING OF CITIZENSHIP

Citizenship is the right of being a citizen of a country. A Nigerian citizen is a person whose parents come from Nigeria or obtained Nigerian citizenship by registration or naturalization.

Membership of a nation based on laid down conditions.

TYPES OF CITIZENSHIP

Citizenship by Birth

This is known as country’s birth. A person automatically becomes a citizen of his/her birth.

Citizenship by Registration

This requires a person to become a citizen in the country he/she married because a marriage requires a registration.

Citizenship by Naturalization

This occurs when a person stays in a particular country for a very time usually 10 years.

This is automatically by a statute. it may involve an application or a motion and approval by legal authorities.

PROCESS OF BECOMING A CITIZEN OF A COUNTRY 

A citizen is a legal membership of a particular country with full right to claim a state as his/her own. The following are the process of becoming a citizen of a country –

1. Marriage

2. Good character

3. Statutory age

4. One’s contribution to the country

5. Readiness to stay in the country

6. Residency

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the students some questions;

2. Guides students to explain meaning and types of citizenship.

Student’s Activities – Find out and report on:

• the birth places of their parents.

• their places of birth.

3. Guides students discussion on processes of becoming citizen of a country.

Student’s Activities – Explain differences between place of birth and place of origin.

CONCLUSION

To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
