CONTENT OF THE LESSON

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION 

Crimes are illegal behaviours or acts that are punishable by law. An illegal act or behaviour such are stealing, robbery, raping, false confession, kidnapping, cultism, terrorism, etc. are forbidden by law.

The person that commits a crime is called a criminal.

 

 

MEANING OF PUNISHMENT 

Punishment is a penalty or sanction given for people that have intentionally committed crime(s) or offense. It may take forms ranging from capital punishment, flogging, forced labour, mutilation of the body to imprisonment and fines.

 

REASONS OR BENEFITS FOR PUNISHMENT 

The benefits of punishment are as follows:

1. To prevent future crimes.

2. To discourage crimes.

3. To ensure justice for all.

4. To restore the victim’s faith in judiciary.

5. To send signal to the criminal minded people.

6. To allow offenders atone for the crime.

7. To alter the offender’s behaviour through education, training and counselling.

8. To promote peace and unity.

9. To maintain law and order.

 

 

LESSON 2 – PUNISHMENT FOR VARIOUS CRIMES 

PUNISHMENT FOR THEFT

A theft is the person that steals or takes things that doesn’t belong to him/her. Stealing is forbidden and punishable by law.

The punishment for a theft is imprisonment and fine or both. The amount of fine and number of months/years of imprisonment depend on the nature of item(s) stolen.

 

PUNISHMENT FOR RAPE 

Rape is a force sexual intercourse with another person without their consent. It is an intentional penetration of the vagina, anus or mouth. Rape can be between opposite or same sex. There can be rape between couples (husband and wife). Women and children are the most common victims. In most cases, men are the perpetrators. Sometimes, women are the perpetrators.

The person that forcefully sexual intercourse with another person is called rapist. It is forbidden and punishable by law.

The punishment for rape is imprisonment or life imprisonment. In case of gang rape, it is minimum of 20 years imprisonment. Victims of rape are entitled to compensation as the court deems fit.

 

PUNISHMENT FOR IMPERSONATION 

Impersonation is an act of pretending to be someone else (living or dead) for the purpose of entertainment or defraud them.

Any person who deliberately defraud another person or acquire properties through impersonation, is a criminal. The offend is forbidden and punishable by law.

The punishment for impersonation is imprisonment. The length of impersonation is based on the kind of impersonation.

 

LESSON 3 – REVISION AND WEEKLY ASSESSMENT (TEST) – As stated in the performance objectives or weekly assessment. 

 

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Teacher organizes the pupils into two or more groups depending on the size of the class.

3. Teacher asks the pupils as group, who is a theft? What is the appropriate punishment for a theft?

4. Teacher participate actively in the class discussion by ensuring everyone in the participate actively.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils explain who a theft is and state appropriate punishment for anyone cut stealing.

5. Teacher uses the pupil’s relevant responses to introduce the lesson – Punishment for Various Crimes Such as Theft, Rape and Impersonation.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils pay attention to the lesson introduction understand the concept of lesson.

6. Teacher leads a class discussion on the meaning and appropriate punishment for a theft, rapist and impersonator.
