TOPIC: RESPONDING TO FORMAL INVITATIONS
PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES
By the end of the lesson, the pupils should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and should be able to:
1. make a list of occasions for formal invitations.
2. identify the features of formal invitations.
3. write a suitable reply, indicating acceptance or regret.
4. use the appropriate language for such replies.
ENTRY BEHAVIOR
The pupils are required to already have learned formal and informal letters.
INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS
The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of samples of replies (in telegram or card form) to formal invitations.
METHOD OF TEACHING
Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.
Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

INTRODUCTION
Formal invitations are standard for events that call for formal dress, such as weddings.
For examples,
1. Wedding
2. Chieftaincy
3. Annual sport festival
4. Launching, etc.
Addresses, dates, and times are clearly spelled out.
CHARACTERISTICS OF FORMAL INVITATION
1. Name of the host – Mr. and Mrs ______
2. Phrasing of the invitation – Cordially request or invites
3. Kind of events – wedding, naming, birthday, etc.
4. Date and time
5. Venue
6. Request to respond
8. Dressing code/color of the day – champagne gold and peach

1. LETTER OF ACCEPTANCE
Dear Mr. and Mrs. Paul,
My wife and I are delighted to accept your invitation to attend your son’s wedding on 16th November, 2018.

2. LETTER OF REGRET
Dear Mr. and Mrs. Paul,
I am so sorry that I can’t join you and Stephen for your wedding. I have to be in Abuja for a wedding, but you two will be first in my thoughts on your special day.
Note:
1. Formal invitation should be responded within 3 days.
2. Replies should be handwriting.
3. Reasons should be brief.

PRESENTATION
To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:
1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;
2. Displays sample of formal invitation.
3. Lets the pupils examine the content in pairs or groups.
4. Uses the invitation to introduce and explain the meaning of formal invitation.
Pupil’s Activities – Listen to the teacher and identify each of the features of formal invitation.
5. Calls one of the pupils to read the invitation.
6. Lets the pupils know that formal invitation can be accepted or rejected.
7. Guides pupils to write formal replies.
8. Summarizes the lesson on the board.
Pupil’s Activities – Particulate the lesson summary and write as instructed.
CONCLUSION
- To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
