LEARNING OBJECTIVES 

By the end of the lesson, most pupils should have attained the following objectives –

1. explain the meaning of greeting.

2. state the mode of greetings.

3. differentiate between formal and informal greetings.

4. practice and demonstrate various of greetings in Nigeria with appropriate replies.

5. practice and demonstrate formal greetings with appropriate responses.

6. discuss the benefits of greeting.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION

Greeting is a way of showing respect or appreciate to people.

It is a self expression that people intentional make their presence known to one and another.

Greeting is an important part of our daily life, culture or societal value.

It is an expression of pleasure on the point of meeting or seeing someone.

 

MODE OF GREETING

The mode of greeting is depend on culture, societal values or relationships among people.

Formal greeting may involve a verbal communication such as hello, good morning, etc. accompanied with facial expression, gestures, body language, or eye contact.

 

 

The most commonly mode of greeting here in Nigeria are as follows:

1. Handshaking

2. Kneel down

3. Prostrate

4. Bend

5. Salute

6. Hugging

7. Clenching of fist

 

FORMAL AND INFORMAL GREETINGS 

Greetings can be formal and informal greetings.

 

FORMAL GREETINGS 

Formal greeting is the most polite and respectful form of greeting specially when interacting with people you do not know well.

Sometimes, It is also used welcome or recognize people.

It is as simple as saying,

1. Hello sir/ma/Treasure, etc.

2. Hello.

3. How are you?

4. Good morning.

5. Good afternoon.

6. Good evening.

7. What are you doing?

8. Nice to meet you.

INFORMAL GREETING

Informal greeting is commonly used when interacting with family members, friends, classmates, and other people you know well.

You don’t need to be formal in your greeting and don’t rude as well.

It is as simple as saying,

Teacher organizes pupils in groups or pairs depending on the size of the class to state the meaning of the following – Good morning, afternoon or evening in Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo Language.

 

GREETINGS IN YORUBA 

Morning – E kaaro (Good morning)

Afternoon – E kaasan (Good afternoon)

Evening/Night – E ku irole / E kale (Good evening)

 

GREETINGS IN IGBO 

Morning – Ututu oma or Ibolachi (Good morning)

PRACTICE AND DEMONSTRATE GREETINGS AND REPLIES 

Teacher organizes pupils in groups or pairs depending on the size of the class to practice and demonstrate correctly the above greetings and replies as well as in their local languages or slangs.

 

BENEFITS OF GREETING

The benefits of greeting are as follows:

1. It helps to start the day.

2. It helps to start to discuss other things.

3. It helps us show love and respect to one another.

4. It helps to show respect to our elders.

5. It helps us to live and work together in peace.

6. It helps us to keep our friendship.

7. It helps us to make new friends.

8. It helps to promote tolerance, good neighborliness, courtesy, friendliness, etc.

 

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Teacher organizes the pupils in groups or pair depending on the size of the class.

 

 

3. Teacher asks the groups or pairs to say the following in Nigerian languages – good morning, afternoon and evening.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils state the meaning of good morning, afternoon and evening in local languages.

4. Teacher uses the pupil’s responses to introduce the lesson and leads a discussion on the meaning and mode of greeting.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils pay attention to the lesson introduction to understand the concept of the lesson and participate actively in the class discussion.

5. Teacher discuss the forms of greeting with appropriate examples.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils differentiate between formal and informal greetings.

6. Teacher uses activity 3 to lead a discussion on various ways of greeting in Nigeria.

7. Teacher asks pupils to demonstrate how the uniform man such as army or policeman greet their superiors or one another.
