By the end of the lesson, the pupils should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and be able to:

 

 

1. explain culture and cultural preservation.

2. mention aspects of our culture to be preserved.

3. mention aspects of our culture to be discarded.

 

 

ENTRY BEHAVIOR

The pupils can identify cultural differences and similarities.

 

 

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:

1. Pictures of dressing from different cultural areas.

2. Pictures showing different ways of greetings, eating, etc.

3. Real cultural materials and objects.

 

 

METHOD OF TEACHING

Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION – OUR CULTURE

Culture is the way of life of a people. Our cultures are different because our histories, location and external influence. It includes the language we speak, food we eat, clothes we wear, etc. It is the totality of the people’s beliefs, modes of worship, works of art and craft, language, type of food, way of dressing, dancing, festivals, technology, ways of thinking and marriage practices.

 

 

CULTURAL PRESERVATION 

Cultural preservation is a way of maintaining the existing cultural heritage for the present and future generations.

 

 

LESSON 2 – WAYS OF PRESERVING AND MAINTAINING OUR CULTURE 

It is important for us to promote and preserve certain aspects of our old customs and traditions. Some of the ways to promote and preserve them are as follows:

1. The practice of living together in a community.

2. Respect for elders and those in an authority.

3. Hard working

4. Traditional religion

5. Indigenous foods

6. Traditional language

7. Chieftaincy titles

8. The museum

 

PART OF OUR CULTURE TO BE DISCARDED 

The part of our cultural heritage to be Discarded are as follows:

 

 

1. Killing of twins

2. Ritual killing

3. Gender discrimination

4. Caste system

6. Female circumcision

7. Tribalism

 

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson based he/she has taught the pupils or lesson learnt.

2. Teacher organizes the pupils into groups depending on the size of class.

3. Teacher tell a short story about killing of twins in Nigeria and the reasons for doing so.

Pupil’s Activities –

3. Teacher asks the pupils if the reasons for killing the twin are justify or not.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils vote against the killing of twin in Nigeria.

4. Teacher uses the story and the pupil’s relevant responses to introduce the lesson and leads a class discussion on the meaning of cultural preservation and part of culture to be discarded.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils pay attention to the lesson introduction and participate actively in the class discuss on the meaning of cultural preservation and part of culture to be discarded.

5. Teacher guides and leads to discuss how to preserve our culture.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils state and analyze the importance of preserving our culture in Nigeria.

6. Teacher summarizes lessons on the board using appropriate lesson evaluation.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils participate actively in the summary of the lesson by responding correctly to most of the questions and write as instructed.

 

 

CONCLUSION

To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
