INSTITUTIONAL SPORTS

Institutional sports are biennial multi-game activities organized host institution and played by students at higher institution of learning. There are three (3) categories of institutional sports in Nigeria,

1. Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA)

2. Nigeria Polytechnic Games Association (NIPOGA)

3. Nigeria College of Education Games Association (NICEGA)

 

THE NIGERIAN UNIVERSITY GAMES (NUGA)

The Nigerian University Games Association was formed in July 1965, shortly after the 1st West African University Games that was held at the University of Ibadan earlier that year. In 1966, the first Nigerian University Games was held at the University of Ibadan among the five Universities in Nigeria at that time namely: University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University), Ile-Ife; University of Nigeria, Nsukka; University of Lagos, Akoka and Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

Presently, there are over eighty Universities as members of NUGA and this cut across private and public (Federal and State) owned. At the beginning, only very few sports were involved but the member of sports have over time grown to sixteen namely: Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Chess, Cricket, Football, Handball, Hockey, Judo, Scrabble, Squash, Swimming, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Tennis and Volleyball.

Over the years, many University athletes have represented Nigeria at various international competitions like the Commonwealth and Olympic Games. Some of the notable ones include Seyi Olofinjana (Football), Vincent Enyeama (Football), Bisi Afoloabi (Athletics), Olumide Oyedeji (Basketball), Chika Chukwumerije (Taekwondo) and Olusoji Fasuba (Athletics), who is the current African record holder in 100 metres (Men) with a time of 9.85 seconds. It is pertinent to add that many more University athletes have turned professional after completing their University education.

The 26th NUGA Games was held at the University of Lagos between 16th – 27th of March 2022. The The University of Jos has won the hosting rights for the 2024 edition of the Nigeria Universities Games. It games held every two (2) years.

 

 

THE NIGERIAN POLYTECHNIC GAMES (NIPOGA)

Nigeria Polytechnic Games Association, often stylized as NIPOGA Games, is a biennial sporting competition involving all accredited polytechnics and colleges of technology in Nigeria. In 2017, the Minister for Sports, Solomon Dalung, was accorded as patron for the games, which saw 81 polytechnics participate in it.

According to the organizers, the games were created to ensure peaceful co-existence among Nigerians and to discover and nurture sporting talents for national assignments. Yaba College of Technology is the most successful institution in the competition, having won the most gold medals on seven occasions, the latest being in 2014.

20th NIPOGA was hosted by the Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin in 2021. The 21st NIPOGA will be host by Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, (RUGIPO) in 2023. It games held every two (2) years.

 

NIGERIAN ADVANCE TEACHERS COLLEGES AND COLLEGES OF EDUCATION GAMES (NATCEGA)

Nigeria College of Education Games Association, popularly known as NICEGA Games is a sporting competition among all colleges of education in Nigeria. The first games was held in 1978. The Federal College of Education Yola, has the capacity to host the 20th edition of Colleges of Education Games Association (NICEGA) in 2021. It games held every two (2) years.
